Job description

SUMMARY

A Medical Laboratory Technician analyzes biological specimens using routine and complex instruments and manual methods. They apply quality control, maintenance, and calibration procedures according to standard operating procedures to provide accurate, reliable, and timely information for preventing, diagnosing, or treating disease. The technician also participates in teaching students and new employees.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • MLT certification from the American Society of Clinical Laboratory Technicians or National Certification Agency is required.
  • New graduates must obtain registration with the ASCP Board within 18 months of employment.
  • Understanding of basic clinical laboratory methodologies and recognition of factors affecting procedures and results.
  • Ability to refer problems to supervisors or medical technologists.
  • No previous work experience necessary.

OR

SUMMARY

Analyzes biological specimens, integrating instrument operation, maintenance, control/calibration with patient data and test results to provide accurate, reliable, and timely information for preventing, diagnosing, or treating disease. Ensures compliance with QC and QA programs to ensure the highest quality patient care. Offers technical support to patient care providers and teaches students and new employees.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Certified as a Medical Technologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP), National Certification Agency (NCA), or Clinical Laboratory Technologists (HEW), or a graduate of an NAACLS-accredited School of Medical Technology and registry eligible.
  • No previous work experience necessary.
  • New graduates or those new to the state must pass the certifying exam within 18 months of employment.
  • Understanding of clinical laboratory methodologies and clinical correlation.
  • Proficient in the use of appropriate equipment.
  • Understanding the ethics of Medical Technology and the importance of accuracy and reliability in laboratory testing.
