Job description

Overview

Conducts routine tests for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease, and performs related duties, following established standards and practices. Under limited supervision, performs blood tests and studies morphology of constituents of blood to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease. Performs various bacteriological, mycological, virological, and parasitological tests to provide data on cause and progress of disease.

Responsibilities
  1. Provide quality specimens for testing assuring correct patient identification, using proper tubes and filling properly, documentation of all performance improvement forms and/or logs.
  2. Perform maintenance and updates on instrument and be familiar with all instrument operations and limitations.
  3. Assure accurate results by performing quality control and instrument troubleshooting procedures.
  4. Perform testing in a timely manner to include stat, urgent and routine turnaround time requirements.
  5. Validate all specimen results prior to reporting.
  6. Assume departmental responsibilities to assure that the department is maintained to CAP standards at all times.
  7. Follow safety standards and use safe work practices.
  8. Assist in continuing education and procedure updates.
Qualifications
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, Experience Required
Education: Associate Degree in one of the sciences is preferred. Successful completion of an approved medical laboratory technician training program or equivalent. Proof of highest level diploma.
Experience: None Required.
Additional Skills/Abilities: Certified or eligible as a medical laboratory technician by the ASCP, AMT, NCA, AAB. Completes hospital and departmental orientation. Ability to work in a stressful environment. Ability to remember multiple procedures and policies. Willingness to work irregular hours with varying assignments. Understanding of safe work practices.
