Job Description - Medical Lab Technician (ASCP) (3303202)

Job Summary

This full-time position is on the day shift with no evening or night rotations.

Role and Responsibilities

The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT I), as defined by CLIA, may perform waived and non-waived testing, authorized by the Laboratory Director, requiring skills aligned with their education and training.

Under supervision, after completing orientation and competency assessments, the MLT I performs tests according to standard operating procedures, ensuring accuracy and proper documentation. The role requires professional knowledge to interpret test results for disease diagnosis and treatment.

Reports to: Clinical Manager and Clinical Supervisor.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Follow procedures for specimen handling, testing, reporting, and record-keeping.
  2. Maintain proficiency testing records.
  3. Adhere to quality control policies and document activities.
  4. Follow established policies when test systems are out of performance range.
  5. Identify and address issues affecting test performance, notifying supervisors as needed.
  6. Document corrective actions for deviations.
  7. If qualified, perform high complexity testing under supervision.
  8. Perform tests using manual or instrument methods, prepare samples, and operate analyzers.
  9. Conduct routine maintenance and troubleshooting of equipment.
  10. Ensure accuracy in test reporting and interpret results.
  11. Recognize and address aberrant results, seeking assistance when necessary.
  12. Participate in QA/QI activities and proficiency testing.
  13. Complete ongoing training and stay updated on technical developments.
  14. Organize work to meet daily objectives and support team members.
  15. Report safety issues and adhere to safety and hospital policies.
  16. Perform clerical duties such as communication of results and inventory management.
  17. Perform other laboratory duties as required.

Qualifications

Education: Associate’s degree in laboratory science or Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited college.

Licenses and Certifications: ASCP certification or equivalent (e.g., AMT) preferred.

Work Experience: 0-2 years of clinical laboratory experience preferred.

Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of laboratory tests and procedures, equipment operation, troubleshooting, attention to detail, teamwork, and effective communication. Familiarity with regulatory standards is required.
