Job summary

Chippenham Hospital is seeking a Medical Lab Technician to support our clinical laboratory operations in Richmond. The role requires following lab policies and procedures, maintaining competency, and participating in ongoing education.

You will assist with specimen handling, quality control, and instrument maintenance to ensure patient safety and accurate results. Preferred candidates hold an Associate Degree in Medical Technology and have registry within 18 months, with ASCP or AMT accepted.

Qualifications

• Associates Degree in Medical Technology or related science.
• ASCP or AMT certification accepted; registry within 18 months of hire.
• Experience as Medical Laboratory Technician preferred.

Responsibilities

• Know, understand, and implement general lab policies and procedures.
• Demonstrate independent judgment with little supervision; may lead tech-in-charge duties when needed.
• Maintain annual competency in designated lab sections; perform proficiency testing.
• Participate in mandatory annual training and quality control activities.
• Assist in specimen receiving, supplies management, and routine duties in the department.
• Troubleshoot instruments, document corrective actions, and investigate specimen issues.

Job Summary and Qualifications

1. Knows, understands, and puts into practice general lab policies/procedures as well as department/section specific policies/procedures. Reviews all posted policy changes as required. Adheres to all regulatory guidelines.

2. Demonstrates the ability to assess a situation, consider the options, and formulate an appropriate course of action. Recognizes and performs duties in an independent manner with little or no supervision. Possess the ability to assume and carry out “tech-in-charge” duties, including the ability to direct the activities of staff or functions, when necessary.

3. Demonstrate initial and annual competency in all appropriate designated lab sections within set deadlines. Accurately performs proficiency testing when scheduled. Participates in continuing education activities.

4. Participates in all facility/corporate mandatory annual training within set deadlines.

5. Is cooperative in assisting the laboratory team in the completion of miscellaneous duties. This includes specimen receiving and putting away supplies when received in the department.

6. Effectively organizes and completes daily tasks in assigned area{s}.

7. Effectively troubleshoots/resolves instrument problems and documents corrective action in appropriate log; when necessary, performs instrumentation repairs. Effectively investigates/resolves specimen collection problems using Outstanding Specimen Report (OSR) and specimen tracking tool when appropriate.

8. Assures quality control is properly performed and logged, works within quality control limits and trends, and follows proper department procedure for corrective action.

9. Preventative maintenance and safety checks of equipment are performed and documented according to schedule.

EXPERIENCE

Preferred - Experience as Medical Laboratory Technician

EDUCATION

Required - Associates Degree in Medical Technology, Biological, Chemical or Physical Science.

CERTIFICATION

Required- Successful completion of registry within 18 months of hire

Continuing education to maintain registry/licensure as required. ASCP or AMT accepted.

Acceptable - Registry/Licensure in a specialty area will be considered.
