Job description

Meritus Medical Center, Inc., Hagerstown, MD.
Medical Lab Scientist — MULTIPLE OPENINGS.

Performs laboratory procedures in a timely and accurate manner according to established hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Performs functional duties in the pre‑analytic, analytic, and post‑analytic phases of the laboratory workflow. Must comply with CLIA standards (42CFR493.1495) for high‑complexity testing. Follows the laboratory’s procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting, and maintaining records of patient test results. Maintains records that demonstrate proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens. Adheres to quality control policies, documents all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and ensures maintenance is performed. When test systems fall outside acceptable performance levels, identifies problems and either corrects them or notifies the general supervisor, technical supervisor, or Laboratory Medical Director, documenting all corrective actions taken.

Establishes a track record of consistently accurate work that demonstrates attention to detail and reflects well on the organization.

Requirements
  • Associate’s degree in medical technology or in a chemical, biological, clinical, or medical laboratory science from an accredited institution.
  • At least six months of full‑time clinical laboratory experience.
  • ASCP or AMT certification, or an equivalent nationally recognized MLT or categorical certification (recommended).
  • Working knowledge of general laboratory equipment (centrifuge, microscope, etc.), keyboards, LIS, calculators, fax, and auto analyzers.
  • Basic computer skills.

*Regulations state that candidates with associate’s degrees in fields other than medical technology must meet additional requirements to perform high‑complexity tests:

  1. Earned an associate’s degree in a laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution; or
  2. Successfully completed an official U.S. military medical laboratory procedures training course of at least 50 weeks and held the military enlisted occupational specialty of Medical Laboratory Specialist (Laboratory Technician).

Salary Range: $20.77 to $33.32 per hour ($43,201.60 to $69,305.60 per year).
