Medical Lab Scientist or Medical Lab Technician - Core Labs - 1st Shift

The Department of Pathology is seeking a Medical Laboratory Technician or Medical Laboratory Scientist to perform complex analytical lab tests, including procedures on biological specimens such as blood, tissue, and body fluids. Responsibilities include using professional judgment to conduct tests that aid in diagnosing, preventing, or treating disease.

This position is 100% full-time, with a schedule from Monday to Friday, 0800-1630, including rotating holidays.

The Iowa Health Care Core Laboratory is a state-of-the-art diagnostic center offering high complexity testing with advanced automation and technology, supporting Chemistry, Hematology, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Critical Care, and Hemostasis services. Located on Iowa Health Care’s Main Campus, it provides essential services in a highly automated, reliable environment dedicated to precision and patient care.

The department will consider applicants for either Medical Laboratory Technician or Medical Laboratory Scientist based on qualifications. Please specify your preferred position in your application or indicate both.

Duties include:

  1. Perform complex analyses on chemical, hematological, microbiological, or immunological specimens.
  2. Evaluate laboratory test results and provide interpretations to healthcare providers.
  3. Assist with bone marrow specimen collection, preparation, and cytogenetic/molecular studies.
  4. Manage bone marrow specimens and related clinical information.
  5. Conduct differentials on blood and marrow specimens and prepare preliminary reports.

Qualifications for MLT:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant science or medical technology program, or
  • MLT certification from ASCP or NCA, or
  • Completion of a US military medical laboratory training course of at least 50 weeks with appropriate occupational specialty.

Desired MLT Qualifications:

  • Certification from ASCP or NCA as an MLT is highly preferred.
  • Experience in high-complexity testing in chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, or coagulation is desirable.

Qualifications for MLS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant science from an accredited institution.
  • 6 months to 1 year of clinical lab experience.
  • Certification as MLS or equivalent from ASCP or HEW.
  • Strong communication skills required.

Desired MLS Qualifications:

  • Experience in high-complexity testing in relevant disciplines is highly desirable.
