Responsible for the analysis of laboratory specimens and subsequent result reporting according to laboratory protocol and procedures to fulfill the requests of the prescribing physician. Performs clinical testing in any or all of the following laboratory areas: blood bank, chemistry, coagulation, hematology, immunology, microbiology, urinalysis, and may include phlebotomy. The lab scientist works independently, organizing work to meet established deadlines.

Responsibilities
  • Ensures all patient specimens are resulted accurately and on time, providing accurate and appropriate testing of specimens received in the laboratory according to established protocols, and reports results in a timely manner to ensure appropriate patient treatment.
  • Maintains required records and documentation, reads and complies with departmental policies, procedures, and maintains maintenance logs; performs basic clerical duties.
  • Follows laboratory quality control procedures and reports discrepancies to the appropriate supervisor to guarantee utmost quality.
  • Performs daily, weekly, monthly, or as needed maintenance and calibration of instruments and equipment; troubleshoots instruments, reagents, and patient specimens, notifying the supervisor if problems cannot be resolved.
  • Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and team members; greets others appropriately and treats everyone in a professional, courteous manner.
  • Communicates all unresolved problems immediately to the appropriate manager or supervisor for resolution.
  • Attends educational conferences and seminars to stay updated on laboratory methodology, instrumentation, procedures, and policies.
  • Keeps work area neat and clean, properly disposes of biohazards.
  • Assists with inventory and stocks supplies as needed.
  • Practices infection control standards, complies with laboratory and hospital policies for universal precautions, and follows standard precaution procedures when handling blood or body fluids.
  • Attends all required safety training programs, understands and describes responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety, and job‑related hazards; follows exposure control plans for blood‑borne and airborne pathogens.
  • Maintains regular attendance and punctuality for scheduled shifts.
  • Participates in the on‑call rotation schedule.
  • Adaptively adjusts assessment, treatment, and care methods to accommodate the physical, cultural, age‑specific, and developmental needs of each person served.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge through continuing education opportunities, including internal and external offerings.
  • Uses assistive devices for lifting as required.
  • Per DRH policy, all required employment conditions, including required vaccinations, must be met and maintained.
  • Performs respirator and fit testing for team members at risk for exposure to airborne infectious diseases or caustic chemicals.
  • Implements DRH Standards of Behavior and exhibits behaviors consistent with DRH core values.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Fluency in oral and written English communication.
  • Basic computer skills: ability to send/receive email, navigate information technology, and use Electronic Health Record tools.
  • Ability to remain flexible and adapt quickly to urgent situations.
  • Ability to adapt procedures, processes, tools, equipment, and techniques to accomplish position requirements.
  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills; attention to detail, precision, and commitment to accuracy.
  • Skill in handling multiple priorities in a high‑volume setting.
  • Bachelor’s degree in medical technology, chemical, physical, or biological science from an accredited institution.
  • Broad knowledge of laboratory procedures, laboratory equipment, and use of a laboratory information system.
  • Moderate knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Current ASCP Medical Laboratory Scientist licensure. (For positions requiring travel, a valid driver’s license and automobile liability insurance must be maintained.)
  • Safe‑Sensitive Position: must test negative for THC in all pre‑employment and post‑employment drug tests, regardless of medical marijuana card status.
  • Vaccinations required per DRH policy; medical and religious exemptions are available upon request.
  • Respirator and fit testing performed for team members at risk for exposure to airborne infectious diseases or caustic chemicals.
