Job description

Position Summary

The Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), II, evaluates, analyzes, and performs automated and complex laboratory procedures. They monitor workflow and ensure regulatory compliance within their assigned area of responsibility.

Schedule:

4x10s; Working every other weekend

Qualifications
Education/Training

Bachelor’s degree required. An associate’s degree with two years of directly related experience may substitute for the bachelor’s degree, in addition to the requirements listed in the Experience section. Successful completion of an approved clinical laboratory training internship is also required.

Licensure/Certification

Maintains a current Florida license as a Medical Technologist, certified in the specialty or specialties required by the laboratory section(s) assigned. National certifications such as ASCP, AAB, or AMT are preferred.

Experience

Minimum of three (2) years of experience. Department-specific competencies may be required based on the area of assignment.

Essential Functions
  1. Evaluates specimens for quality and preanalytical errors.
  2. Verifies results and quality control data for accuracy and reliability.
  3. Performs, evaluates, and documents all quality control, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting procedures.
  4. Works semi-autonomously with general guidance on moderately complex procedures.
  5. Has knowledge of other laboratory areas and their interrelations.
  6. Verifies instrument performance standards, including linearity, reportable range, and method comparisons.
  7. Demonstrates proficiency with computer systems, including ordering, result entry, and inquiries.
  8. Ensures proper utilization and preparation of reagents and supplies; assists with inventory management.
  9. Communicates critical results to patient caregivers.
  10. Evaluates the accuracy of results considering all testing phases to identify sources of error.
  11. Reports work activities, instrument issues, supply issues, and pending work during shift changes.
  12. Responds to technical inquiries related to work.
  13. Assists in training new team members and students.
  14. Maintains regular, punctual attendance in accordance with Orlando Health policies and standards.
  15. Ensures compliance with all organizational policies and procedures.
