Medical Lab Scientist II, Core, Part Time

  • Position Type: Non-Exempt

Located in Largo in the heart of Prince George’s County, our new state-of-the-art regional medical center (UM Capital Region Medical Center) will provide improved access to primary and ambulatory care services, and serve as a tertiary care center for critically ill patients. Our new space will also allow us to expand our offerings as a community partner to help improve the health of Prince George’s County residents.

Variable days/hours, including every other evening shift and weekends, from 2pm to 10:30pm.

The Medical Laboratory Scientist II (MLS II), under general supervision, performs analyses on various sample types. Maintains proper records and uses independent judgment to generate accurate test results. Responsible for ensuring quality, efficiency, and safety in laboratory functions. Acts as a fully effective team member of the multidisciplinary patient care services team.

  • Performs routine and specialized laboratory testing in their assigned specialty following all standard operating procedures.
  • Correlates laboratory findings with disease states; integrates data from other laboratory areas; confirms abnormal results; resolves specimen and testing discrepancies; and initiates follow-up measures for unusual results.
  • Calibrates instruments; performs and documents preventive and corrective maintenance on equipment.
  • Troubleshoots routine technical and analytical problems, including specimen collection issues, with minimal supervision.
  • Monitors and reviews quality control data and quality assurance information to ensure reliability of patient results; documents quality occurrences; and initiates corrective actions.
  • Performs testing on proficiency samples as required, in compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards.
  • Ensures tests are completed promptly according to departmental turnaround times and reconciles pending test reports efficiently.
  • Provides orientation and training to new employees; attends continuing education sessions as required.
  • Assists in reviewing standard operating procedures upon request.
  • Maintains a neat and organized work area, replenishing supplies as needed.
  • May serve as charge technologist on assigned shifts, troubleshooting operations issues and initiating corrective actions.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, biology, or related sciences preferred; an Associate Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or related field, or completion of Military Laboratory Technician program with experience, required.

Experience: Three years of clinical laboratory experience required.

Licensure/Certifications: ASCP or equivalent preferred.
