Job summary

Penn State Health is seeking a Medical Lab Scientist I for the Special Hematology Lab at Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. You will perform complex tests on blood, body fluids and tissues, identify organisms, cross-match blood for transfusion and prepare cells for cellular therapies.

This is a full-time position within a premier academic medical center. Minimum qualifications include a Bachelor’s Degree; ASCP/AMT eligibility and certification within 18 months if not currently certified.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required; an Associate degree may substitute for a Bachelors.
• If not certified as MLS/MT, eligible for ASCP/AMT or equivalent exam and certification within 18 months of hire.

Responsible to perform complex laboratory tests on blood, body fluids, cells, and tissues. Identify bacteria, parasites, and other microorganisms, analyze chemical content of fluids, cross match blood for transfusion and organ transplantation, aseptically prepare cells for use in cellular therapies. The results of these tests are used in diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION(S):

• Bachelor’s Degree or if currently certified as a Medical Laboratory Scientist or a Medical Technologist, an Associate degree in chemical, physical or biological science or medical laboratory or equivalent education and training may be substituted for a Bachelors.
• If not currently certified as a Medical Laboratory Scientist or a Medical Technologists, must be eligible for the ASCP, AMT or equivalent board certification exam and must be Medical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Technologist certified within 18 months of hire.
