Overview

The Medical Lab Scientist collects, prepares, and handles specimens for analysis from patients of all ages. They perform laboratory testing to aid in disease diagnosis.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences

Licensure/Certification/Registry:

  • Registered MLS (ASCP)/MT (ASCP) required within six months of hire or equivalent certification required within one year of hire.

Experience:

  • Prior work experience preferred.

Other Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Moderate physical effort.
Responsibilities
  1. Perform various laboratory tests, evaluate data, and verify the validity of patient test results through quality control sample evaluation prior to reporting.
  2. Obtain blood and other body fluids from inpatients/outpatients of all ages, employees, etc., as requested by authorized personnel.
  3. Operate hospital computer systems to acquire necessary patient information and manage patient accounts.
  4. Perform preventative maintenance and troubleshoot equipment following manufacturer guidelines.
  5. Demonstrate knowledge of instrumentation functions and malfunctions, and decide when to use backup instruments.
  6. Operate all assigned instruments and perform technical procedures with minimal supervision.
  7. Assist in orientation and training of new employees as directed.
  8. Participate in continuing education and meet all mandatory in-service requirements.
  9. Assist in the overall operation of the lab, including cost-effective practices and safety regulations.
  10. Support the manager in departmental operations.
  11. Promote health and safety in the work environment.
  12. Participate actively in competency assessments.
  13. Maintain cross-training in at least two technical areas.
  14. Maintain confidentiality of patient testing/results in accordance with hospital policy.
  15. Ensure compliance with all relevant regulatory agencies.
  16. Perform other duties as assigned.
