  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • New graduates (90 days post grad) must be registry eligible and obtain certification within 18 months; this exemption applies if Grady Health System is their first job post-graduation.

Responsibilities

  • Follows standard operating procedures for collecting, accepting appropriate samples, processing and analyzing biological specimens and other substances for routine and complex laboratory tests.
  • Integrates clinical and laboratory data to determine discrepancies, verifies results in the LIMS, and monitors workload for high-priority samples.
  • Executes, verifies, and documents quality control procedures; makes decisions to maintain accuracy and precision of testing systems.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on equipment and instruments; detects problems and performs corrective procedures.
  • Participates in continuing education, teaches procedures to students and employees in training.
  • Contributes to continuous quality improvement standards for the department.
  • Provides information to customers about specimen status, requirements, and test results; ensures customers receive needed information.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor, Technical Specialist, or Manager.

Job Summary

The Medical Lab Scientist analyzes biological specimens integrating instrument operation, maintenance, and control/calibration with patient data and test results to provide accurate, reliable, and timely information for preventing, diagnosing, or treating disease. Ensures compliance with quality control and quality assurance programs to affect the highest quality patient care.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree is required.
  • New graduates (90 days post grad) completing an accredited educational institution must be registry eligible and obtain certification within 18 months of employment. This 18-month exemption only applies to graduates where Grady Health System is their first job post-graduation.

Must be certified as a Medical Technologist by:

  • American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or
  • American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB)
  • National Certification Agency (NCA) or
  • Deemed registry eligible as a Medical Technologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or
  • Graduate of a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) accredited School of Medical Technology and registry eligible.
Responsibility
  • Follows standard operating procedures for collecting, acceptance of appropriate samples, processing and analyzing biological specimens and other substances for routine and complex laboratory tests.
  • Integrates clinical and laboratory data to make decisions regarding possible discrepancies. Verifies results in the laboratory information system. Monitors workload to ensure timely completion for high priority samples.
  • Executes, verifies, and documents quality control procedures. Makes decisions concerning the quality control results and institutes proper procedures to maintain accuracy and precision of testing system.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on equipment and instruments, detects problems and performs corrective procedures.
  • Participates in continuing education for growth and maintenance of professional competence. Teaches laboratory procedures to students and employees in training.
  • Actively participates in developing and meeting continuous quality improvement standards for the department.
  • Provides information to customers inquiring about specimen status, collection requirements, and test orders and results, and ensures the customer receives the information needed.
  • Performs any other duties as assigned by supervisor, Technical Specialist, or Manager.
  • Additional duties as assigned.
