Job description

Vanderbilt University Medical Center

Location: Nashville, Tennessee.

Job Summary

Nights: 6:30 p‑7:00 a. Requires a working understanding of medical technology and ability to recognize problems. Must have good communication skills, work well under high stress, and possess knowledge, training, experience, and competence in caring for patients across all age groups (neonates, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, geriatrics). The role includes specimen collection, high‑complexity specialty management, and assistance to technologists and the Administrative Laboratory Director.

Key Responsibilities
  • Processing and testing in one or more departments during a shift.
  • Mastery and practice of laboratory policy and procedure.
  • Intimate knowledge of testing methods, theory, instruments and tools used for diagnostic utility.
  • Quality assurance, kit validation, instrument maintenance, proficiency testing, environmental monitoring, reagent preparation, diagnostic reporting, and monitoring alarms.
  • Incident reporting and documentation.
  • Maintaining professional and medical ethics, confidentiality, and patient privacy.
  • Specimen collection specialist.
  • High‑complexity specialty management.
  • Assisting technologists and the Administrative Laboratory Director as needed.
Technical Capabilities
  • Diagnostic Testing (Fundamental Awareness): Demonstrates proficiency in practical diagnostic testing and delivers accurate results.
  • Equipment Maintenance (Fundamental Awareness): Has limited experience but is capable of conducting maintenance activities within the assignment area.
  • Quality Assurance (Fundamental Awareness): Understands the goal of increasing productivity and demonstrates quality‑management practices that improve products and services.
  • Data Analysis (Fundamental Awareness): Has some training or limited experience; performs routine analytical work and is familiar with reporting tools such as ACL, SQL, SAS.

Certifications

Certified Medical Technologist (ACLS) – American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).

Relevant work experience in a clinical laboratory setting.
