Job summary

St. Mary's Health & Clearwater Valley Health in Idaho seeks a Laboratory Technician to analyze specimens and report results per established laboratory protocols.

The role includes performing tests, calibrating and maintaining instruments, phlebotomy when required, and adhering to HIPAA and safety policies while communicating with patients and co-workers. This is a full-time, 40-hour-per-week position in a hospital laboratory.

Qualifications

• Associates degree in a relevant science; bachelor's degree preferred.
• MLT (ASCP) or equivalent registration or completed a technician program.
• 6 months internship; preferred.
• Four months clinical laboratory internship preferred.
• ASCP or similar certification is preferred.
• Able to multitask and prioritize.
• Familiar with EMR system and accurate data entry skills.

Responsibilities

• Analyze laboratory specimens and report results according to laboratory protocol and procedures.
• Perform testing of specimens according to established laboratory protocol and procedures.
• Maintain and calibrate instruments and equipment as required.
• Report test results in a timely manner.
• Troubleshoot instruments, equipment and reagents; notify supervisor if unable to solve problems.
• Follow hospital policies for universal precautions and safety; maintain HIPAA compliance.
• Perform phlebotomy (venipunctures, finger sticks) as appropriate.
• Share on-call duties with other laboratory staff.
• Communicate with patients, families and co-workers in person, in writing and by telephone.

Job description

Responsible for the analysis of laboratory specimens and subsequent result reporting according to laboratory protocol and procedures.

Essential Job Functions

• Follows established procedures for laboratory quality control and reports discrepancies to the appropriate supervisor.
• Performs accurate and appropriate testing of specimens received in the laboratory, according to established laboratory protocol and procedures.
• According to policy and procedures performs daily, weekly, monthly or as needed, maintenance on instruments and equipment as appropriate. Performs calibration of equipment as required.
• Reports test results in a timely manner and according to established laboratory protocol and procedures.
• Troubleshoots instruments, equipment, reagents, and patient specimens when problems occur. Notifies the supervisor if unable to solve the problem.
• Complies with established laboratory and hospital policies for universal precautions and safety procedures. When handling blood and/or body fluids, universal precaution procedures will be followed in order to minimize exposure to infectious diseases. Safety policies and procedures will be followed when using chemicals.
• Performs phlebotomy (venipunctures, finger sticks, and bleeding times) as appropriate for the patient requiring this procedure.
• Will be assigned to proportionate share of call with other laboratory staff.
• Follows hospital exposure control plans/blood borne and airborne pathogens.
• Maintains confidentiality of all hospital and patient information at all times. Follows HIPAA regulations and policies.
• Regular and predictable attendance is an essential job function.
• Communicate with patients, families and co-workers in person, in writing and on telephone.

Minimum Qualifications

• Experience performing accurate and appropriate testing of specimens.
• Associates degree in a relevant science required, bachelors degree preferred.
• MLT (ASCP) or equivalent registration or has completed a technician training program in a school accredited/approved by HHS, or MLT eligible under Medicare laboratory regulations.
• 6 months internship; preferred.
• Four months clinical laboratory internship preferred.
• ASCP or similar certification is preferred.
• Able to multitask and prioritize.
• Familiar with EMR system and accurate data entry skills.
