Job summary

ST. MARY'S HOSPITAL, INC. in Cottonwood, ID is seeking a full-time laboratory professional responsible for the analysis of specimens and result reporting in accordance with hospital protocol. This role includes phlebotomy, quality control, and timely communication of results.

You will perform testing, maintenance, and calibration of instruments, while ensuring adherence to HIPAA and safety policies. A relevant science degree is required, with ASCP or equivalent certification preferred.

Qualifications

• Experience performing accurate and appropriate testing of specimens.
• 6 months internship; preferred.
• Four months' clinical laboratory internship preferred.
• ASCP or similar certification is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Follows established procedures for laboratory quality control and reports discrepancies to the appropriate supervisor.
• Performs accurate and appropriate testing of specimens received in the laboratory, according to established laboratory protocol and procedures.
• Maintains instrument and equipment through routine calibration and maintenance.
• Reports test results in a timely manner and according to established laboratory protocol and procedures.
• Troubleshoots instruments, equipment, reagents, and patient specimens when problems occur and notifies supervisor if unable to solve the problem.
• Follows hospital policies for universal precautions and safety procedures to minimize exposure to infectious diseases.
• Performs phlebotomy as appropriate for the patient requiring this procedure.
• Communicates with patients, families and co-workers in person, in writing and on telephone.

Responsible for the analysis of laboratory specimens and subsequent result reporting according to laboratory protocol and procedures.

Essential Job Functions:

• Follows established procedures for laboratory quality control and reports discrepancies to the appropriate supervisor.
• Performs accurate and appropriate testing of specimens received in the laboratory, according to established laboratory protocol and procedures.
• According to policy and procedures performs daily, weekly, monthly, or as needed, maintenance on instruments and equipment as appropriate. Performs calibration of equipment as required.
• Reports test results in a timely manner and according to established laboratory protocol and procedures.
• Troubleshoots instruments, equipment, reagents, and patient specimens when problems occur. Notifies the supervisor if unable to solve the problem.
• Complies with established laboratory and hospital policies for universal precautions and safety procedures. When handling blood and/or body fluids, universal precaution procedures will be followed in order to minimize exposure to infectious diseases. Safety policies and procedures will be followed when using chemicals.
• Performs phlebotomy (venipunctures, finger sticks, and bleeding times) as appropriate for the patient requiring this procedure.
• Will be assigned to proportionate share of call with other laboratory staff.
• Follows hospital exposure control plans/blood borne and airborne pathogens.
• Maintains confidentiality of all hospital and patient information at all times. Follows HIPAA regulations and policies.
• Regular and predictable attendance is an essential job function.
• Communicate with patients, families and co-workers in person, in writing and on telephone.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Experience performing accurate and appropriate testing of specimens.
• Associate's degree in a relevant science required, bachelor’s degree preferred. MLT (ASCP) or equivalent registration or has completed a technician training program in a school accredited/approved by HHS, or MLT eligible under Medicare laboratory regulations.
• 6 months internship; preferred.
• Four months' clinical laboratory internship preferred.
• ASCP or similar certification is preferred.
• Able to multitask and prioritize.
• Familiar with EMR system and accurate data entry skills.
