Job summary

Portneuf Medical Center in Pocatello, ID seeks a variable shift, PRN Medical Laboratory Assistant / Phlebotomist. The role focuses on specimen collection, receiving, processing, and collaboration with lab staff to ensure timely, accurate testing and patient care.

Responsibilities include proper specimen handling, patient communication, and adherence to infection control practices. Prior experience preferred; BLS required within 14 days of hire.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• BLS certification must be obtained within 14 days of hire or transfer into the role and prior to providing direct patient care.

Responsibilities

• Assist with specimen collection, receiving, processing and distribution.
• Ensure specimens are obtained according to laboratory guidelines.
• Communicate pertinent data about patient or sample to care providers.
• Follow protocols for specimen packaging and transport.
• Register patients, order tests, receive specimens, accessioning and processing as per protocol.
• Demonstrate infection control practices and correct patient identification.
• Perform drug screen collection and processing as assigned.
• Monitor phlebotomy draw list and dispatch phlebotomists as needed.
• Handle courier duties as assigned.
• Perform tests in compliance with policies and procedures.
• Prepare laboratory equipment for testing.
• Work mainly in specimen processing and dispatch.

Responsibilities

• The Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) functions as a laboratory professional who assists other laboratory personnel in specimen collection, specimen receiving, specimen processing, laboratory testing, process improvement, and quality initiatives.
• Ensure specimens are obtained in accordance with laboratory guidelines.
• Demonstrate proper communication skills to relate pertinent data or information about the patient or laboratory sample to appropriate care provider.

Preferred Job Requirements:

• Certification from a nationally recognized agency as a phlebotomist.
• Certification from a nationally recognized agency as a medical lab assistant within 2 years of hire date.
• Experience working in the clinical setting.
