Medical Lab Assistant - Laboratory - Evenings - 1430-2300 - Resource

General Summary:

To perform clerical tasks pertaining to the Laboratory Outreach Program, receive incoming specimens into the LIS and distribute to the appropriate technical area. Some data entry, answering phones, tube system, and other duties as needed. Duties may include responsibilities specific to the assigned department and may vary. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Requirements:

  • Requires High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of Medical Assistant training preferred.
  • Previous laboratory experience preferred.
  • Proficient use of computers required.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
  • Ability to prioritize workload and multi-task.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  1. Registers office outpatient and contract specimens accurately and promptly utilizing laboratory computer system, including receiving, interpreting, and entering physician orders using all appropriate codes.
  2. Receive incoming specimens, checks for proper labeling and routes to the appropriate technical area, while following University of Michigan Health-West procedures and policies.
  3. Receives and instructs patients, nurses, staff physicians, doctor’s offices regarding proper collection of specimens and laboratory reports, procedures, and other lab information according to Lab test directory instructions.
  4. Centrifuges, aliquot specimens, processes paperwork, and documents in the LIS.
  5. Prepare Send-Out test, including Newborn Screening to the Michigan Department of Health and to other department/laboratories within the health system.
  6. Performs document imaging in EPIC as assigned, retrieve samples for additional testing.
  7. Accurately fills supply request orders by compiling supplies in correct quantities as requested by physician office within 24 hours of request when needed.
  8. Communicates with the Shift Supervisor immediately if there is a critical problem with a specimen or order.
  9. Consistently create an exceptional experience with each contact, via inbound and outbound calls, online chat, email, etc.
  10. Follow all Lab safety procedures to minimize risk to self and others; reports gaps and escalates as necessary.
  11. Performs other duties as assigned. These may include but are not limited to: Maintaining a current knowledge base of department processes, protocols and procedures, pursuing self-directed learning and continuing education opportunities, and participating on committees, task forces, and work groups as determined by management.
