Job description

Summary

The Medical Instrument Technician (MIT) - Diagnostic Ultrasound performs a full range of ultrasound procedures, including complex examinations that may lack standard instructions or procedures. The technologist may independently perform portable ultrasound exams in various settings such as intensive care units, emergency rooms, surgery, and throughout the Medical Center or satellite clinics.

Qualifications

Applicants pending completion of educational or certification requirements may be tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens cannot be recruited, as per VA Policy.
  • Education: No specific educational requirements; substitutions are allowed at GS-4 and GS-5 levels.
  • Licensure or Certification: Not required but strongly desirable at GS-6 or above; specific certifications may be required for certain specialties or supervisory roles. BCLS and ACLS certifications are desirable.
Grade Determinations:

Details of experience, KSAs, and certifications required for GS-6 through GS-8 levels are specified, including knowledge of medical terminology, physics of soundwaves, ability to operate ultrasound equipment, and experience performing complex examinations.

Preferred Experience:

At least 1 year of ultrasound technologist experience, including MSK, abdominal, transvaginal, guided procedures, thoracic, head and neck, and Doppler.

Duties
  • Performs a full range of ultrasound procedures, including complex examinations without standard instructions.
  • Independently conducts portable ultrasound exams in various clinical settings.
  • Works independently, evaluates critical and emergency procedures, and manages patient scheduling to optimize ultrasound unit use.
  • Performs ultrasound examinations of multiple body areas, assists radiologists with imaging-guided procedures, and participates in scheduling to ensure efficiency.
  • Maintains courteous and respectful interactions with management, co-workers, patients, and the public, demonstrating teamwork and productivity.
  • Provides age-specific care, protecting sensitive data in compliance with laws and policies, and utilizes computer systems for documentation and communication.
  • Works Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, with various benefits including paid time off, parental leave, childcare subsidy, retirement options, and federal insurance programs.
