Medical Engineering Assistant Technician - Royal Lancaster Infirmary

An exciting opportunity for a Medical Engineering Assistant Technician has arisen within the Medical Engineering Department based at Royal Lancaster Infirmary, Lancashire.

Main duties of the job

The role involves working within a small team responsible for the maintenance, repair, management, and commissioning of a wide range of medical devices used throughout the Trust and in the local community. The role will also include working at Westmorland General Hospital and Furness General Hospital as required.

Successful candidates will possess:

  • The ability to communicate effectively with all members of staff, visitors, and patients
  • Good organizational skills and the ability to manage their own day-to-day workload
  • Experience working within an engineering environment with knowledge of electrical and electronic systems used in medical settings
  • ONC in an engineering discipline or equivalent
  • A considerate and tactful approach when working close to patients
  • The ability to maintain computerized records
  • The ability to see projects through to completion

Job responsibilities

The post includes:

  • Servicing and repairing medical devices on the Furness site and surrounding community sites
  • Supporting clinical staff with technical information for safe device operation
  • Acceptance testing of new medical devices
  • Safe disposal of medical devices at end-of-life
  • Implementing safety alerts from monitoring and regulatory bodies
  • Working within ISO9001 quality systems and identifying improvements
  • Managing secondary duties such as COSHH management, health and safety, waste management, and loan device indemnity control
Person Specification
Education and Qualifications
  • Knowledge of electronics through ONC/BTEC or equivalent, with practical experience
  • HNC in medical device maintenance or electrical/electronic engineering, physiology training preferred
Experience
  • Diagnosing faults in electronic/mechanical equipment
  • Experience with safe operating systems for electronic maintenance
  • Routine and breakdown maintenance experience
  • Participation in training courses for skill enhancement
  • Experience calibrating and maintaining medical devices
Skills, Ability, and Knowledge
  • Effective communication skills at all levels
  • Manual dexterity and sensory skills for delicate equipment maintenance
