Our client, a privately-owned veterinary hospital serving the greater San Mateo and San Francisco Bay Area, is seeking an experienced Veterinary Medical Director to lead their clinical team. This is an exciting opportunity to help shape the direction of a growing, multi-specialty practice known for delivering exceptional, personalized care to both pets and referring veterinarians.

About the Role

The Medical Director will provide clinical leadership and oversight across the hospital's emergency and specialty departments, ensuring the highest standards of patient care, staff development, and operational excellence. This role blends hands-on clinical practice with leadership responsibilities, working closely with hospital ownership and department leads to guide the practice's continued growth.

What You’ll Do
  • Provide clinical leadership and oversight for emergency and specialty medical teams
  • Maintain and elevate standards of care across all departments, ensuring consistency, safety, and quality in patient outcomes
  • Mentor, support, and help develop associate veterinarians and clinical staff
  • Collaborate with hospital leadership on strategic growth, service line expansion, and operational planning
  • Serve as a key point of contact for referring veterinarians, reinforcing strong relationships within the veterinary community
  • Help develop and enforce clinical protocols, policies, and best practices
  • Support recruitment, onboarding, and retention of veterinary talent
  • Maintain an active caseload and continue practicing clinical medicine alongside leadership responsibilities
  • Champion a culture of collaboration, compassion, and continuous learning among staff
  • Stay current on advancements in veterinary medicine and integrate new techniques/technologies as appropriate
What We’re Looking For
  • Strong clinical judgment and hands-on experience in emergency and/or specialty veterinary medicine
  • Proven leadership or management experience within a veterinary hospital setting
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to build trust with staff, clients, and referring veterinarians
  • A collaborative, team-oriented approach paired with the confidence to make sound clinical and operational decisions
  • Passion for mentoring and developing veterinary talent
  • Comfort operating in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment
Qualifications
  • DVM (or equivalent) from an accredited veterinary program
  • Active veterinary license in good standing (or eligibility for licensure in California)
  • Several years of clinical experience, with prior leadership, supervisory, or medical director experience strongly preferred
  • Board certification in a relevant specialty a plus, but not required
  • Base salary in the range of $350-$420k, DOE
