Job summary

Description

The Courier is responsible for the safe, accurate, and timely pickup and delivery of medical specimens, packages, and other assigned materials for the client. The position operates assigned vehicles, follows established routes, uses CXT software to document pickups and deliveries, and ensures materials are transported securely and in accordance with healthcare privacy, safety, labeling, and documentation requirements.

The Courier performs pre-route vehicle and equipment inspections, verifies route readiness, completes scheduled and urgent deliveries, maintains communication with dispatch and supervisors, and completes end-of-shift vehicle procedures. This position requires a valid driver's license, excellent driving awareness, attention to detail, reliability, time management, accountability, and the ability to safely handle sensitive medical materials.

Responsibilities Include:

• Professional Service & Accountability – Provide professional, respectful, and responsive service to clients, customers, internal teams, dispatch, supervisors, and client staff. Communicate clearly and accurately, respond to requests in a timely and appropriate manner, demonstrate ownership and follow-through, maintain OMG dress code standards and a clean, professional appearance, and adapt to the hospital site expectations, workflows, and operating environment.
• Pre-Route Readiness – Inspect the assigned vehicle's exterior and interior, including tires, lights, signal lights, wipers, cabin equipment, radio, headlights, and other assigned equipment; verify adequate fuel levels and route readiness; confirm the required courier lab bag and assigned mobile device are available and operational; accurately record required inspection details; and check out the assigned vehicle and mobile device according to established procedures.
• Route Navigation & Pickup Processing – Use CXT software to navigate assigned routes and complete pickup and delivery stops accurately and on schedule. Log arrival at scheduled pickup locations at the correct time, scan all packages and lab specimens, take required photographs, and complete pickups accurately and on time.
• Delivery Processing & Confirmation – Log arrival at delivery destinations, scan packages for delivery, follow delivery or drop-off instructions, verify correct pickup and drop-off locations based on labeling and route instructions, obtain required signatures or delivery confirmations, and complete deliveries within required timeframes.
• Safe Transport of Medical Materials – Transport specimens, including blood, urine, tissue samples, and other medical materials, securely and without compromising package integrity. Follow sender handling instructions, established labeling and documentation requirements, HIPAA privacy requirements, OSHA standards, and biohazard safety guidelines.
• Timeliness & Urgent Service – Follow assigned routes and strict pickup and delivery deadlines, manage time-sensitive assignments, respond promptly to urgent or Stat delivery requests, and complete Stat deliveries within the required two-hour service window.
• Communication & Escalation– Keep dispatch and supervisors informed of pickup or delivery delays, delivery status, route issues, and other operational concerns; promptly communicate or escalation issues that may affect service.
• End-of-Shift Procedures – Return the assigned vehicle to the designated parking location, remove unnecessary materials, maintain vehicle cleanliness, and take the vehicle through a designated car wash when necessary and in accordance with established procedures. Attach all photographs and written documentation to close out the shift as required.
• Other Duties – Perform additional duties and assignments as directed by management.

Requirements

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record required, subject to applicable company and client requirements.
• Previous experience as a courier, driver, delivery professional, medical courier, or in logistics or transportation preferred.
• Ability to safely operate an assigned vehicle and perform routine vehicle readiness inspections.
• Ability to learn and follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), route requirements, client requirements, and site-specific workflows.
• Ability to learn and use CXT software, mobile devices, package scanning tools, and other assigned technology.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accuracy while managing time-sensitive assignments.
• Ability to communicate professionally with customers, dispatch, supervisors, and management.
• Ability to safely handle medical specimens and comply with applicable privacy, safety, labeling, and documentation requirements.
• Ability to work independently while maintaining communication and accountability.
• Ability to meet established productivity, quality, safety, and service expectations.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

The Courier works both independently and throughout the hospital service environment and surrounding assigned delivery routes. The position requires driving, entering and exiting a vehicle, walking, lifting and carrying assigned materials, up to 20lbs using available lift/transport tools, operating mobile technology, and working under time-sensitive conditions.
