Job summary

Baystate Health is seeking a Medical Coding Specialist to join our Quality Coding team. This full-time role involves translating clinical documentation into ICD, CPT, and HCPCS codes while ensuring compliance and accurate billing.

You will review records, abstract codes, and support education of staff while contributing to quality initiatives in a remote-capable setting. An associates degree in Medical Terminology and CCS preferred are required or encouraged.

Qualifications

  • Associates degree in Medical Terminology required.
  • Certified Coding Specialist (AHIMA) preferred.
  • Extensive knowledge of ICD, CPT, and HCPCS codes and payer requirements.
  • Strong analytical, detail-oriented, and deadline-driven.
  • Excellent collaboration and communication with clinical and administrative staff.
  • Proficient with Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
  • Commitment to ongoing education in coding and billing practices.

Responsibilities

  • Review medical records to assign ICD, CPT, and HCPCS codes and modifiers.
  • Abstract and enter codes and demographics into electronic systems.
  • Identify and resolve incomplete or missing documentation to support billing.
  • Collaborate with clinical staff to educate on coding practices and documentation.
  • Participate in quality assurance and coding improvement initiatives.
  • Monitor coding activity and report backlogs or irregularities to leadership.
  • Work with coding and billing teams to promote accuracy and efficiency.
  • Complete medical record abstracts and coding activities for regulatory needs.
  • Maintain knowledge of coding regulations and payer requirements.
  • Participate in meetings and professional development.
  • Follow departmental policies and safety requirements.

Baystate Health, a nationally recognized leader in healthcare quality and safety, and home to Baystate Medical Practices, the largest multispecialty group in the region is looking for a full-time Medical Coding Specialistto join our experienced Quality Coding team.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The Medical Coding Specialist plays an essential role in ensuring accurate coding, billing, documentation, and regulatory compliance by translating complex medical record information into appropriate diagnostic and procedural codes. If you have a strong understanding of medical coding, enjoy analyzing clinical documentation, and take pride in accuracy and quality, this is an opportunity to make a meaningful impact behind the scenes of patient care.

  • Review and analyze medical records, tests, and clinical reports to accurately assign appropriate ICD, CPT, and HCPCS codes and modifiers in accordance with established coding guidelines.
  • Abstract and enter medical codes and required demographic information into electronic systems and encounter forms.
  • Identify and help resolve incomplete or missing documentation to support timely and accurate billing.
  • Partner with medical and clinical staff to provide education and support related to coding practices and documentation requirements.
  • Participate in quality assurance, performance measurement, and coding improvement initiatives.
  • Monitor coding activity and communicate potential backlogs, documentation issues, irregularities, or trends to leadership.
  • Collaborate with coding and billing teams to promote accuracy, efficiency, and consistency.
  • Complete medical record abstracts and coding activities supporting regulatory requirements, physician peer review, quality initiatives, research, utilization review, and hospital planning.
  • Maintain current knowledge of coding and billing regulations, payer requirements, and federal and state guidelines.
  • Participate in meetings, educational programs, seminars, and professional development opportunities.
  • Follow departmental policies, procedures, quality standards, and health and safety requirements.

SCHEDULE:

  • Full-time
  • 8:00am-4:30pm or 8:30am-5:00pm

LOCATION:

Fully remote work opportunity -- Candidate MUST live in the following states: AZ, CT,FL, ME, MA, NH, OH, PA, RI, TX,VT

QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Associates degree in Medical Terminology, Required
  • Certified Coding Specialist AHIMA, preferred
  • Extensive knowledge of ICD, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems, third-party payer requirements, and applicable federal and state coding and billing regulations.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple assignments while meeting strict deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with clinical, coding, billing, and administrative teams.
  • Proficiency with computer systems and Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
  • Commitment to maintaining current knowledge of evolving coding and billing practices through continuing education, professional publications, and seminars.

Note: The compensation range(s) in the table below represent the base salaries for all positions at a given grade across the health system. Typically, a new hire can expect a starting salary somewhere in the lower part of the range. Actual salaries may vary by position and will be determined based on the candidate's relevant experience. No employee will be paid below the minimum of the range. Pay ranges are listed as hourly for non-exempt employees and based on assumed full time commitment for exempt employees.
