Summary
This position supports Mercy's philosophy of patient centered care by the timely and accurate coding of hospital or professional services using ICD-10-CM and CPT/HCPCS classification systems for the purpose of reimbursement, research, and statistics in compliance with federal regulations.
Job Description
Job Duties
- Codes the correct first listed diagnosis consistent with established coding guidelines
- Identifies all appropriate secondary diagnoses and assigns appropriate codes.
- Assigns CPT/HCPCS codes supported by documentation
- Applies modifiers according to anesthesia coding rules and CCI edits.
- Understands and applies LCD/NCD policies when appropriate
- Applies payor specific guidelines in qualifying scenarios
- Obtains clarification from provider when documentation is incomplete or unclear to ensure accurate coding.
- Reviews/Resolves Claim Edits
- Follows official coding guidelines and directives and uses reference materials to ensure codes assigned are in compliance with state and federal regulations.
- Must maintain 95% accuracy rate
- Must meet department defined productivity requirement
- Assists with students/job shadows
- Participates in special projects/teams
- Trains other coders
- Processes denials
- Follows Mercy's safety guidelines, carries out job-specific safety duties and responsibilities, and promptly reports any unsafe conditions, situations, incidents and injuries.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of ICD-10-CM/ and CPT/HCPCS coding and medical necessity guidelines.
- Ability to read and interpret medical record documentation including laboratory and pharmacology data.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office tools (excel, outlook, word).
- Strong computer background with basic typing and keyboarding skills.
- Work prioritization skills needed.
- Ability to concentrate on detailed tasks for long periods of time.
- Ability to work independently with frequent interruptions.
- Excellent interpersonal communication (verbal, non-verbal, and listening) skills and written communication skills.
- Knowledge of payment systems and federal and state regulations related to billing, coding, and compliance.
Professional Experience
- Five years previous anesthesia, surgery, or any combination coding experience required.
Education
- Associate of Applied Science degree or Bachelor's degree in Health Information Technology (or related program of study) or completion of coding certificate program strongly preferred.
Licensure, Certification, Registration
- AHIMA or AAPC coding certification (e.g. RHIT, RHIA, CCS, CCS-P, CPC) is required.
- Certified Anesthesia and Pain Management Coder (CANPC) certification strongly preferred, required within first 6 months
