Job summary

UMMC is seeking a Medical Coder - Inpatient to review and code inpatient records at the UMMC Medical Tower. You will apply ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS codes to hospital services while ensuring accurate documentation and payer-compliant billing.

Requirements include a high school diploma or GED and at least one year of medical coding experience, proficiency with EHR systems, and strong written and verbal communication to collaborate with clinicians and the billing team.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with healthcare providers for accurate documentation.

  • Demonstrate effective communication with management via telephone and email.

Job Summary:

Medical Coder-Inpatient reviews and codes inpatient medical records and clinical documentation for hospital services. This role requires expertise in ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems to assign accurate diagnostic and procedural codes, ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations, payer requirements, and industry standards for reimbursement and billing.

Education & Experience Required:

High school diploma/GED and one (1) year of medical coding experience.

Certifications, Licenses, or Registration Required:

One of the following medical coding certifications from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) or the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC):

  • Registered Health Information Management Technician (RHIT)
  • Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
  • Certified Outpatient Coder (COC)
  • Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC)
  • Certified Coding Associate (CCA)
  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS or CCS-A)
  • Certified Coding Specialist- Physician-Based (CCS-P)
  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC or CPC-A)
  • Any Physician specialty certification from AAPC
Preferred Qualifications:

Associate's degree in health information management or medical coding.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Proficient in electronic coding systems and electronic health records. Skilled in using personal computers, Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook), and email applications for communication and scheduling. Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to foster team collaboration across departments. Capable of researching and using available resources independently. Experienced in assigning accurate codes using coding guidelines with minimal supervision. Equipped to work remotely, with necessary hardware and high-speed internet for efficient task completion.
