We are seeking an experienced Medical Coder I to join our healthcare consulting practice. The role is fully remote within the US. What you'll do

  • Accurately assigns diagnosis and procedure codes for facility and professional services for outpatient specialty and any outpatient primary care encounters billable to a third party.
  • Researchesandresolvescoding edit failures as assigned.
  • Review medical documentation and codes for compliance with federal coding regulations and DoD guidelines.
  • Obtain clarification of conflicting, ambiguous, or non-specific documentation.
  • Complete training on all government systems, including all annual and short notice training.
  • Meet or surpass weekly Productivity and Quality targets.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with team members and follow directions provided by the Team Lead.

Required Qualifications

  • Post-high school education through a university or technical school program resulting in completion of ONE of the following:
  • 1) An Associate’s degree or higher in Health Information Management, Healthcare Administration, or a biological science; OR
  • 2) A university certificate in medical coding; OR
  • 3) At least 30 semester hours’ university/college credit that includes relevant coursework such as anatomy/physiology, medical terminology, health information management, and/or pharmacology; OR
  • 4) Successful completion of an American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) or American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) coding certification preparation course for professional services or facility coding that includes medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, health information management concepts, and pharmacology; OR
  • 5) Successful completion of a training course beyond apprentice level for medical technicians, hospital corpsmen, medical service specialists, or hospital training, obtained in a training program given by the Armed Forces or the U.S. Maritime Service under close medical and professional supervision.
  • One active coding certification credentials from the following: Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), or Certified Coding Specialist – Physician (CCS-P), Certified Evaluation and Management Coder (CEMC), National Alliance of Medical Auditing Specialists’ (NAMAS), or Certified Evaluation and Management Auditor (CEMA).
  • Three (3) years of medical coding and/or auditing experience in two (2) or more medical, surgical, andancillary specialties within the past 10 years; OR a minimum of two (2) years of medical coding or auditing experience if that experience was in an MTF.
  • A minimum of one (1) year of performance in the specialty
  • Maintain required productivity standards of 80% or more of assigned workload within a performance period (quarter).
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain minimum accuracy rating of 97%
  • Ability to secure a DOD security clearance, must not have been unfavorably removed from a government position.
  • Experience with Microsoft Windows and Office 365 applications including Word, Excel, Teams and others.
  • Ability to work in a private and secure area while protecting PHI/PII and meeting HIPAA requirements.
  • Experience with DoD Systems. MHS Genesis, 3M Encompass 360, or Joint Legacy Viewer (JLV) (preferred).
