Job Summary: Assists nursing/medical staff in providing various patient care activities and related services necessary to care for the health needs of the patient. Responsibilities include physical exam, routine test, administering IV as required and in accordance with established standards, policies and procedures.

Key Job Responsibilities

• Provides timely intervention to provide medical care to meet needs of patients within emergency and urgent care areas, including:
  • Prepares the patient for examination.
  • Ensures that the appropriate equipment is available.
  • Observes restraints and forensic policies and procedures.
  • Schedules diagnostic laboratory and radiological tests as ordered.
  • Transports patients in a safe and timely manner.
  • Maintains inventory of patient belongings.
• Provides patient care by performing assigned tasks for patient care plan implementation, such as:
  • Contributing information in day-to-day management of patient care.
  • Carrying out routine care measures as delegated.
  • Taking and recording patient’s vital signs.
  • Preparing and forwarding specimens (urine, stool, sputum).
  • Delivering activities of daily living: hygiene, nutrition, elimination, progressive activity.
  • Maintaining records of fluid intake and output.
  • Providing measures of comfort and convenience.
  • Observing and reporting patient’s response to interventions/treatment.
  • Providing one-on-one sitter care for patients requiring close observation and monitoring.
• Provides immediate response and crisis intervention during emergency situations. Works collaboratively with hospital, security, forensic and law enforcement officials to maintain a safe and secure environment at all times.
• Demonstrates knowledge and skills required to provide IV therapy and care in an emergency/urgent care environment, including:
  • Assessing patient fluid and electrolyte balance.
  • Initiating peripheral intravenous therapy.
  • Administering peripheral parenteral fluids.
  • Assessing patient for complications related to peripheral infusion therapy.
  • Care, set‑up, and maintaining intravenous equipment.
  • Discontinuing IV therapy.
  • Utilizing infection control principles.
• Performs diagnostic EKGs and related procedures:
  • Informs and explains EKG test purposes and procedures.
  • Determines proper placement and attaches electrodes.
  • Administers EKG exam and observes patient, tracings, and equipment, reporting abnormal reactions.
  • Ensures accurate documentation of procedures.
  • Collects specimens and performs phlebotomy efficiently.
  • Calms and reassures patients or significant others during specimen collection.
  • Prepares and transports specimens and test requests to appropriate laboratories.
• Interacts and communicates in a customer-responsive and courteous manner, promoting patient/customer satisfaction.
• Performs clerical duties such as answering telephone, responding to call signals, filing/assembling charts, completing tab sets, transcribing orders and scheduling tests.
• Prepares and maintains required records, reports, and files for administrative and compliance purposes.
• Lifts, positions, and transports patients utilizing proper technique and equipment; accompanies patients during clinical tests or procedures in other departments.
• Maintains confidentiality related to patient/family, department, and hospital information, adhering to HIPAA and compliance policies.
• Responds appropriately to emergency situations and notifies appropriate personnel.
• Completes required continuous training and education, including department‑specific requirements.
• Attends staff meetings, mandatory in‑services, and participates in performance‑improvement initiatives.
• Assists with care and maintenance of department equipment; reports equipment malfunctions.
• Maintains a clean, orderly, safe environment for patients and personnel, adhering to policies, compliance, and patient‑safety standards.
• Provides coverage for relief and absences as required.

Qualifications

• Education: High school graduate or equivalent plus completion of one of the following:
  • Approved EMT program along with an approved IV course.
  • Advanced EMT program.
  • Paramedic program.
• Qualified by education, training, or experience to work with adolescent, adult, and/or geriatric patient populations.

Work Experience

• Six (6) months of EMT or EMT‑P (paramedic) experience.
• Must successfully complete unit‑specific competency.
