Job description

Overview

The EMT-Paramedic assists the nursing/medical staff in providing patient care and related services to meet health needs, including physical exams, routine tests, and administering medications as required and in accordance with established standards, policies and procedures.

Responsibilities
  • Essential Function — Provides timely intervention to deliver medical care to meet patient needs in emergency and critical care areas. Includes preparing the patient for examination, ensuring appropriate equipment availability, observing restraints and forensic policies, scheduling diagnostic tests, transporting patients safely and timely, and maintaining inventory of patient belongings.
  • Provides patient care by performing tasks for patient care plan implementation: contributing information for daily management, carrying out routine care measures, documenting completion of tasks, taking and recording vital signs, preparing and forwarding specimens, delivering activities of daily living (hygiene, nutrition, elimination, progressive activity), maintaining intake/output records, and providing comfort measures. Documents promptly and communicates patient status and needs to appropriate staff.
  • Provides close observation and monitoring to ensure patient safety and reports responses to interventions/treatments. Follows up with patients as required and maintains clinical competency for age-specific needs in a caring, compassionate manner.
  • Provides immediate response and crisis intervention during emergencies. Collaborates with hospital staff, security, forensic and law enforcement to maintain a safe environment.
  • Medication and IV Therapy — Administers medications as ordered (PO, IM, SQ, IO, IV); assesses fluid/electrolyte balance; initiates peripheral IV therapy; administers IV fluids; assesses for IV-related complications; maintains IV equipment; discontinues IV therapy; applies infection control principles.
  • EKG and Phlebotomy — Performs diagnostic EKGs: explains procedures to patients, places electrodes correctly, administers exams, monitors tracings, reports abnormal findings, ensures accurate documentation, collects specimens and performs phlebotomy with patient comfort in mind, transports specimens as required.
  • Interacts and communicates in a responsive, courteous manner per iRESPECT standards and collaborates with staff and patients to coordinate care.
  • Collaborates with forensic teams and law enforcement to maintain safety. Maintains awareness of safety, infection control, and compliance policies related to inmates/arrestees; provides crisis intervention when needed.
  • Performs clerical duties (answering phones, responding to calls, filing, transcribing orders, scheduling tests) and maintains required records and files for administrative/compliance purposes. Uses patient computer systems for data entry and retrieval.
  • Lifts, positions, and transports patients using proper technique and equipment. Accompanies patients for tests or procedures in other departments and transports charts, specimens, equipment, and supplies.
  • Maintains confidentiality per HIPAA and organizational policies. Adheres to department and organization policies on safety, quality, and infection control. Responds to emergencies and notifies appropriate personnel.
  • Provides coverage for relief and absences as required.
Training, Equipment, and Environment
  • Completes required continuous training and education, including department-specific requirements. Attends mandatory meetings and continuing education; supports performance improvement initiatives.
  • Assists with care and maintenance of department equipment and uses supplies cost-effectively. Restocks and cleans patient care areas; reports equipment malfunctions.
  • Maintains a clean, orderly, safe environment and adheres to policies on compliance, quality improvement, patient safety, and infection control.
  • Provides coverage as required for relief and absences.

Qualifications
  • Education — High School graduate or equivalent; Successful completion of an approved Paramedic program; Qualified by education, training, and experience to work with adolescent, adult, and/or geriatric patient populations as dictated by specialty assignment.
Work Experience
  • At least 1 year experience; Six (6) months experience as a Paramedic. Must successfully complete unit-specific competencies. (Required)
