Job summary

Exponent is seeking a Medical Billing / Coding / Prior Authorization Subject Matter Expert for a remote, contract engagement. You will evaluate revenue-cycle workflows in a simulated environment and document differences from real-world practice.

Candidates should have 5+ years in revenue cycle or coding, 3+ years using Availity, 3M Codefinder, CoverMyMeds, and related tools, and be currently employed in the field or left within the past two years. Compensation is $72–$99 per hour.

Qualifications

• 5+ years in revenue cycle, coding, prior authorization, or pharmacy.
• 3+ years daily, hands-on use of Availity, 3M Codefinder, CoverMyMeds, RightFax, athenahealth, or MDLand iClinic.
• Currently employed in the field, or left within the past two years.
• CPC, CPB, CCS, RHIT, RHIA, or CPhT preferred.
• Working knowledge of CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS for billing and coding.
• For 3M, inpatient coding or coding audit experience; for CoverMyMeds, daily prior-authorization work.
• Clear written communication.

Medical Billing / Coding / Prior Authorization Subject Matter Expert (Availity, 3M, CoverMyMeds) - Remote Contract

Overview

Exponent is hiring medical billers, coders, prior-authorization and insurance-verification specialists, and pharmacy technicians as subject matter experts for a healthcare technology client. You will evaluate revenue-cycle and authorization workflows in a simulated environment and document where the environment differs from real-world practice. This is a remote, part-time, contract engagement. No protected health information is involved.

Responsibilities

• Complete assigned workflows in a simulated environment: eligibility and benefits verification, authorization submission and appeals, claim generation and scrubbing, remittance review, charge entry, coding and abstracting, and fax routing
• Identify steps that fail, behave differently from the production system, or are missing
• Document findings in structured forms and short written notes
• Attend a remote onboarding session and periodic check-ins

Qualifications

• 5+ years in revenue cycle, coding, prior authorization, or pharmacy
• 3+ years of daily, hands‑on use of at least one of: Availity, 3M Codefinder (3M 360 Encompass), CoverMyMeds, RightFax, athenahealth, MDLand iClinic
• Currently employed in the field, or left within the past two years
• CPC, CPB, CCS, RHIT, RHIA, or CPhT preferred
• Working knowledge of CPT, ICD‑10, and HCPCS for billing and coding roles
• For 3M Codefinder: inpatient coding or coding audit experience with groupers and principal/secondary diagnosis selection
• For CoverMyMeds: daily medication prior‑authorization work
• Clear written communication

Engagement details

• Location: Remote, United States
• Type: 1099 independent contractor
• Hours: approximately 10 per week during active weeks, self‑scheduled
• Duration: approximately 4 weeks of work over 5 to 6 calendar weeks, with alternating active and inactive weeks; extension possible based on performance
• Start: week of September 14, 2026
• Equipment: your own computer and internet connection; browser‑based, nothing to install

Compensation

$72 to $99 per hour, determined by role, years of experience, and assigned system. Confirmed during screening.
