Assists in examinations and treatment of patients under the supervision of a physician or clinician. Supports patient care management through various administrative functions.
Job Specific Duties
- Answers telephones, routes calls, takes, and relays accurate messages.
- Prepares and administers medications/immunizations to patients as directed by the provider, if applicable.
- Communicates significant changes in patient conditions or behavior to clinicians and physicians.
- Ensures all medical records and patient charts contain necessary documentation for appointments. Completes charting, collects, and distributes medical record documents.
- Gathers data for reports and contacts other employees, departments, agencies, and individuals for additional information. May prepare reports for provider approval.
- Maintains billing charges and reconciliations, assists with claims forms, and answers patient questions regarding payments.
- Runs reports for credit card transactions, super bills, and prepares final bookkeeping of cash drawer, including deposits.
- Maintains a clean and orderly work environment and patient rooms.
- Operates and maintains medical equipment in proper working condition. Ensures medical supplies and inventory are maintained.
- Performs and documents vital signs and measurements. Provides patient and family education.
- Assists physicians with simple procedures and patient transport. Collects specimens and distributes them to the laboratory.
- Prepares for patient visits by organizing charts, printing super bills, and notifying staff of schedule changes.
- Schedules appointments, verifies authorizations, and manages diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
- Processes documentation for office visits and follows up with patients as needed.
- Serves as receptionist: conducts patient check-in, registration, collects co-payments, and verifies referrals and insurance information.
- Tracks samples per policy to ensure proper coordination with physician orders.
- Enters electronic orders for labs, x-rays, and prescriptions for provider review and approval.
- Processes medication refills as directed by the provider and protocols.
Qualifications
- Medical Assistant Certification or diploma/certificate from an accredited program, or prior experience with the ability to obtain certification within 6 months.
- Active and in good standing with American Heart Association BLS certification.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- High School diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Fluency in English and Spanish highly preferred.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Basic computer and math skills.
- Excellent patient management, customer service, and interpersonal skills.
- 1-2 years of physician office experience preferred.
- Experience coordinating clinical care preferred.
