The UVA Earn While You Learn Trainee Program provides structured coursework and paid on-the-job training as a full-time, benefitted employee. Certified Medical Assistants perform a variety of patient care and administrative support functions under the supervision of Medical Center professionals in an ambulatory or outpatient setting.

The UVA Earn While You Learn Trainee Program provides structured coursework and paid on-the-job training as a full-time, benefitted employee. Minimum requirements are a high school diploma or GED; no experience is required. Position Compensation: $18.00/hour + benefits

You will be paid a total of 40 hours/week. All course and certification fees will be paid for by UVA Health in return for a 1-year full-time commitment as an employee at UVA Health once the course is completed.

Medical Assistant Trainee (CMA) - Earn While You Learn Program

  • Performs basic clinical skills, as delegated by licensed medical professionals and in accordance with policy and procedure, to promote patient health and wellness.
  • Identifies patients prior to assisting with any intervention.
  • Assists with the collection of patient vital signs and weights and documents accordingly.
  • Assists with the patient rooming process and documents in the electronic medical record including setting specific patient screenings.
  • Promptly reports abnormal findings and changes in patient condition to the registered nurse, licensed independent professional, or preceptor.
  • Assists with patient mobility using safe lifting equipment and following mobility standard operating procedures for safe transfer and positioning practices.
  • Assists providers and clinical team with general patient care, including assisting with physical assessments, examinations, and procedures.
  • Assists with preparing examination/procedure room.
  • Assists with preparing and maintaining sterile fields.
  • Assists with patient procedure preparation.
  • Assists with obtaining labels and sending/transporting specimens for diagnostic testing.
  • Observes environment for safety hazards and reports potential hazards.
  • Observes and adheres to safety policies including sharps handling and biohazardous materials management.
  • Cleans equipment and performs safety checks as needed.
  • Reports safety and quality incidents involving patients, staff, and visitors.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of fire/emergency/infection control programs.
  • Performs administrative support functions.
  • Completes supply stocking, inventory, and ordering as needed.
  • Maintains necessary skills and competencies.
  • Identifies opportunities for professional development and self-improvement.
  • Completes mandatory training and regulatory in-service requirements within established timeframes.
  • Maintains attendance and engagement with formal education programs.
  • Demonstrates teamwork in patient care and recognizes time-sensitive issues.
  • Assumes responsibility for professional development of self and others.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Position Compensation Range: -

Minimum Requirements:

Education: High School Graduate or Equivalent.

Experience: No experience required.

Licensure: No licensure or certifications are required to apply to this role.

Physical Demands: The job requires frequent bending and stooping; proficient communication, auditory, and visual skills; attention to detail; ability to lift/push/pull 20-50 lbs; potential exposure to chemicals, blood/body fluids, and infectious diseases.
