Under direct supervision of the provider, the medical assistant will be responsible for patient assessment and care, maintaining appropriate documentation, and supporting clinical and administrative tasks. The role requires basic knowledge of primary or specialty care, with the ability to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care. The medical assistant will coordinate care to ensure high-quality, compassionate patient service, oversee patient management at office locations, and act as a liaison with other organizations and departments. Responsibilities include ordering medical, pharmacy, and office supplies, ensuring compliance with policies and regulations such as OSHA, CLIA, and HIPAA, and training new staff or students as needed.
The position involves providing patient education, assisting with specialty care procedures, managing symptoms, and monitoring high-risk patients. The medical assistant may perform general office duties like filing, answering phones, and managing electronic records. Responsibilities may vary depending on the practice, with guidance from the immediate supervisor.
Responsibilities include triaging calls, scheduling, relaying test results, supporting patient consults and testing, and managing insurance pre-certifications. The role involves performing routine patient assessments, recording vital signs, updating medical records, performing medication reconciliation, assisting providers during examinations and procedures, preparing examination rooms, and sterilizing equipment. The medical assistant may also perform injections, dressing changes, blood draws, and assist with procedures like EKGs or pulmonary function tests.
Additional duties include maintaining a safe environment, traveling to satellite clinics if needed, demonstrating proficiency with office computer systems, maintaining confidentiality per HIPAA, performing clerical tasks, ordering supplies, documenting and coding in medical records, participating in quality reviews, and addressing age-specific patient needs. The role requires competency in Microsoft Windows and participation in ongoing training.
Certifications required include BLS, Medical Assistant certification (RMA, CMA, or equivalent), with specific credentials preferred as per CMS requirements. Education required is a high school diploma or GED.
Experience in a healthcare setting, excellent interpersonal skills, OSHA training, and knowledge of medical office practices are preferred. Previous experience in a physician clinic is advantageous.
Physical and mental requirements include the ability to handle stressful situations, wear protective equipment, move freely within the facility, perform the physical tasks outlined, and maintain alertness and dexterity. The physical demand level is classified as light, with occasional lifting of up to 20 lbs. and frequent standing, walking, and postural changes.
