Job Purpose

The Medical Assistant serves in a medical support role as part of a team providing quality healthcare to El Rio patients. Responsibilities include providing direct patient care, as well as clinical and non-clinical services within the scope of practice at El Rio Health, at a designated clinic location.

This scope of practice adheres to El Rio Health Policies and Procedures. Employees work under general supervision, with any issues involving policy departures reviewed with a supervisor.

The primary goal is to support El Rio's mission of providing comprehensive, quality, and accessible healthcare by performing essential functions effectively.

Essential Job Functions
  • Complete all clinical and non-clinical duties efficiently, maintaining high standards and low error rates.
  • Follow the Patient Intake Process, documenting information, responses, and actions into the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
  • Assist with or perform procedures within the scope of practice, complying with Nursing Policies and Procedures.
  • Respond to patient needs based on visit reasons, coordinating outside medical records, lab, and radiology results.
  • Ensure provider orders are completed, and patients understand discharge instructions, documenting all actions in the EHR.
  • Support clinical operations through administrative activities, ensuring proper documentation.
  • Maintain proficiency through annual competency evaluations.
  • Keep work environment clean, safe, and hygienic, complying with policies.
  • Understand and apply compliance standards, including Joint Commission Accreditation requirements.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and organizational policies.
  • Adhere to the Code of Conduct, Policies, Standing Orders, and Service Standards.
  • Ensure a safe environment, reporting hazards immediately.
  • Label, rotate, and stock medications and supplies, maintaining proper inventories.
Minimum Education and Experience
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D., or equivalent experience related to the job functions.
Required Licenses, Certifications, and Registrations
  • Medical Assistant Certificate from an accredited institution.
  • Current BLS certification for healthcare providers.
  • Level I fingerprint clearance card, either current or applied for within seven days of employment.
  • Reliable transportation and valid driver's license if driving during work hours, complying with insurance requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
  • One year of medical assistant experience in an ambulatory setting.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
