Job summary

Centra Health is seeking a Certified Medical Assistant to join the Centra Medical Group's Resource Pool across central and southern Virginia. The MA provides patient support, may perform clerical duties, and coordinates care with providers under supervision.

Responsibilities include vital signs, patient education, medications administration, EMR documentation, and adherence to HIPAA and CMS guidelines. AAMA certification and BLS are required, with a valid driver’s license.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma / GED is required.
• Graduate Medical Assistant program ABHES/CAAHEP accreditation is required.
• BLS certification within the first six months of employment is required.

Responsibilities

• Assists in examination and treatment under provider supervision; measures vital signs.
• Provides compassionate environment and educates patients and families.
• Administers medications and wound care as directed by a provider.
• Maintains accurate patient records in an EMR system.
• Maintains a safe, clean work environment and HIPAA compliance.
• Collects blood or tissue samples, observes asepsis; phlebotomy competencies on file.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

This position provides patient support services to a provider and can perform clerical duties. Medical Assistants coordinate and provide care to patients in a medical practice under the tenets of Centra's Professional Practice Model. Medical Assistants practice under the direction and supervision of a licensed medical practitioner authorized by regulations of the Department of Health Board of Medicine. Medical Assistants collaborates with providers and members of the interdisciplinary team to provide high-quality patient care. Under the direction of a provider, the MA coordinates the various care processes that are necessary to achieve desired outcomes. MAs works to promote and sustain a culture reflective of Centra's mission, vision, and values.

Responsibilities

• Assists in examination and treatment of patients under the direction of a provider; measures vital signs, and interviews patients to obtain health histories
• Establishes a compassionate environment by providing emotional, psychological and spiritual support to patients and families
• Under the direction of the provider provides health promotion, counseling and education to patients and caregivers. Identifies patient care requirements by establishing personal rapport with potential and actual patients and other persons in a position to understand care requirements
• Administers medications, wound care, and personal health interventions at the direction of a provider, as deemed competent.
• Maintains accurate, detailed patient records and charts using an electronic medical records (EMR) system
• Maintains safe and clean work environment by complying with policies and procedures, rules, and regulations
• Adheres to CMG Quality Metrics driven by Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS)
• Maintains patient confidence and protects operations by keeping information confidential and following Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of (HIPAA) regulations
• Collects blood or tissue samples from patients, observing principles of asepsis to obtain blood sample per Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulatory standards. Note: Phlebotomy competencies must be completed and on file
• Conducts chemical analyses of body fluids, such as blood or urine, using microscope or automatic analyzer to detect abnormalities or diseases and enter findings into computer
• Analyzes the results of tests or experiments to ensure conformity to specifications, using special mechanical or electrical devices
• Sets up, maintains, calibrates, cleans, and tests sterility of medical laboratory equipment
• Maintains competency to support all CMG clinical sites to include primary care, urgent care, and specialty services.
• May perform other duties as assigned or requested and job specification can be modified or updated at any time

Qualifications

• Required Education: High School Diploma / GED, and Graduate of Medical Assistant program ABHES or CAAHEP accredited institution or completion of a Clinical Medical Assistants Program (CVCC program) where candidate is qualified to sit for the Clinical Medical Assistant Program. Maintains a professional portfolio, annual Centra mandatory CBLs, annual CMG age specific competency completion/education verification.
• Required Experience: 3 years of experience as a medical assistant in an office setting
• Required Certification & Licensures Certification / License: Current certification or registration through the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) or another equivalent organization. BLS certification within the first six (6) months of employment and maintain current BLS certification. Valid driver's license.
