JOB SUMMARY:

The Medical Assistant/Receptionist will assist in the delivery of care in the ambulatory setting under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse or physician. This position will act as both a Medical Assistant and a Receptionist Scheduler.

MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES / CRITICAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Medical Assistant Responsibilities

  • Provide patient care in outpatient physician practice under the direction of the practicing physician, physician assistant, or licensed nurse.
  • Assist with other clinical and clerical duties to ensure optimization of patient experience within the practice.
  • Welcomes patients by greeting them, in person or on the telephone; answering or referring inquiries.
  • Prepares patients for the health care visit by directing and/or accompanying them to the examining room; providing examination gowns and drapes; helping them to position themselves for the examination and/or treatment; arranging examining room instruments, supplies, and equipment.
  • Verifies patient information by interviewing patient; reviewing and/or recording medical history; taking vital signs; confirming purpose of visit or treatment.
  • Supports patient care delivery by helping health care providers during examinations; preparing laboratory specimens; performing basic laboratory tests on the premises; disposing of contaminated supplies; sterilizing medical instruments; drawing blood; preparing patients for x-rays; taking electrocardiograms; removing sutures; changing dressings.
  • Completes records by recording patient examination, treatment, and test results.
  • Schedule hospital procedures, surgeries, and tests. Precert and obtain test results.
  • Handle phone calls and messages for prescriptions, notes, forms, etc.
  • Complete disability and insurance forms.
  • Maintain clinical flow in all areas of the practice.
  • Keeps supplies ready by inventorying stock; placing orders; verifying receipt.
  • Keeps equipment operating by following operating instructions; troubleshooting breakdowns; maintaining supplies; performing preventive maintenance; calling for repairs in collaboration with the Office Manager.
  • Maintains knowledge in area of medical terminology.
  • Greets and directs visitors/patients courteously and professionally.
  • Obtains, verifies and/or updates patient demographic information.
  • Collects co-pay and copy of the patient’s insurance identification card.
  • Assists with answering and screening calls and the triaging process of all incoming telephone calls for urgent information or services. Schedules appointments and records and forwards messages as required.
  • Responds to requests for routine information or assistance within scope of knowledge and authority and refers visitors to appropriate staff members as necessary.
  • Initiates calls as requested by Physician, Office Manager or other professional staff.
  • Responsible for opening/closing office duties as needed.
  • Photocopying, faxing, and distributing documents as required and in a timely manner.
  • Maintains order of document processing area /supply closets, notifying Office Manager of the need to order supplies, ensuring all supplies are distributed upon receipt and kept in their designated areas.
  • Maintain copy machines, ensuring all supplies are on hand; call for repair when required.
  • Responsible for the management of incoming and outgoing departmental mail; dating as required, sorting, distributing, and generating responses as appropriate and in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrates ongoing commitment to customer service excellence and supports the customer service plan.
  • Performs other related tasks as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

High School Diploma or equivalent required.

Certification or Diploma from accredited Medical Assistant school/program OR Bachelor of Science in Chemistry or Biology with National Medical Assistant Certification required.

National Certification preferred.

HeartSaver certification

Two years job experience preferred.

Demonstrate basic computer skills.

  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written English proficiency required

Demonstrate flexibility due to unexpected changes in workload.

Demonstrate ability to work independently and as a team player.

Strong organizational skills.

PATIENT POPULATION SERVED:

All practice patients as needed

MANUAL SKILLS:

Significant portions of daily assignments involve application of manual skills requiring motor coordination in combination with finger dexterity, (i.e., typing on computer keyboard, use of telephone).

PHYSICAL EFFORT:

Mobility is necessary to provide quality patient care. Manual dexterity is used to assist patients with activity of daily living, operate equipment and perform assigned treatments. Physical effort is required to assist patients with transfer and ambulation, which may involve lifting, pushing and pulling patients. Hearing within normal range is necessary to safely provide patient care. Must be able to lift a minimum of 25 pounds.

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:

Regular exposure to blood / bodily fluids, chemicals and equipment used in the treatment of patients.

Significant portions of daily assignments involve occupational risks such as cuts, needle puncture, exposure to toxic chemicals, injuries from fall or back injury sustained while moving, lifting or positioning patients, equipment or materials.
