Job Description

Provides clerical and clinical office support. Assists in examination and treatment of patients under the direction of the physician.

Responsibilities
  1. Maintains patient flow during clinic hours.
  2. Documents review of systems; measures vital signs such as pulse rate, respirations, blood pressure, weight, and height (see Appendix A for specifics); updates past and current medical, social, and family history; reviews medications and updates medication list at each visit.
  3. Correctly records patient information in the electronic medical record (EMR).
  4. Prepares patient charts in EMR for visits by scanning, abstracting, and reviewing to ensure that all diagnostic test results, hospital reports, and other medical records necessary to help the physician care for the patient are in the patient's chart.
  5. Accesses and navigates websites or calls outside facilities to obtain necessary information.
  6. Refills medications and pre-authorizes medications including communicating with the patient, pharmacy, or insurance company as needed to complete the task.
  7. Maintains recording of patient samples and other medications and disposes of expired medications.
  8. Prepares treatment rooms for examination of patients; maintains clean, fully supplied exam rooms.
  9. Completes patient assistance paperwork/requests as needed.
  10. Obtains pertinent medical information from patients to facilitate medical decision-making per specific office protocol procedures.
  11. Returns calls as needed. Responds to MyChart as needed.
  12. Works in-baskets, daily work flow logs, and work queues in EMR/Practice Management system.
  13. Answers incoming calls, schedules appointments, checks-in and out patients, and completes pre-certifications for prescriptions, procedures, and surgeries as needed.
  14. Maintains a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following and enforcing standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations.
  15. Maintains patient confidence and protects operations by keeping patient care information confidential.
  16. Understands and adheres to the legal responsibilities and requirements of the medical assistant role.
  17. Seeks knowledge and understanding of quality measures and patient experience.

Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Specialized knowledge or skills required to perform the position duties include:
  1. Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Outlook, Excel, EMR, and scheduling systems).
  2. Strong verbal and social skills to facilitate respectful interactions with patients, physicians, visitors, co-workers, and drug representatives in person or by telephone.
  3. Ability and willingness to travel to other physician offices as requested or needed.

EDUCATION: High school diploma or equivalent required. Associate Degree preferred.
YEARS OF EXPERIENCE: 1-2 years of prior relevant medical office experience in a clerical role.
LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS:
BLS certification required.
