Job description

General Summary of Position

MedStar Health is seeking a Certified Medical Assistant to join our team, demonstrating excellent customer service and patient interaction skills.

The Medical Assistant will perform clinical and administrative duties in an ambulatory care setting under supervision of a physician/provider or registered nurse. Responsibilities include venipuncture, medication and vaccine administration, vital signs measurement and documentation, assisting with patient exams, and providing clerical support.

This position may require floating to other sites within the system.

Primary Duties:
  1. Assist providers with patient preparation, office procedures, exams, and patient education. Support clinical care team to optimize patient flow, manage patient volume, and prepare for scheduled visits. Screen patients for preventive care, barriers, safety concerns, and fall risks. Conduct surveillance for care transitions and follow-up tasks. Perform motivational interviews and identify behavioral health needs, notifying providers accordingly.
  2. Report problems concerning patients, families, and staff. Participate in quality improvement initiatives. Attend training on safety and infection control. Maintain compliance through audits of logs, medication supplies, emergency equipment, and environment. Engage in population management activities, including patient self-management support, goal setting, and pre-visit planning.
  3. Perform selected patient/laboratory testing, including Point of Care Testing, TB skin tests, ECGs, pulmonary tests, vision and hearing tests. Remove sutures/staples, document activities in EMR, and perform follow-up tests and procedures. Collect and process specimens, and document accordingly.
  4. Assist with patient discharge, provide chaperoning, and fulfill infection control responsibilities. Manage equipment maintenance, drug and supply inventories. Conduct telephone screening to gather patient information and determine appropriate disposition.
  5. May insert IV catheters, monitor urinary catheters, and prepare/administer medications and injections (limited to intradermal, subcutaneous, intramuscular). Perform phlebotomy, propose medication refills in EMR, and handle test requisitions and insurance pre-authorizations.
Qualifications:
  1. High School Diploma or GED.
  2. Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) by the American Association of Medical Assistants.
  3. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  4. Experience in ambulatory care or similar setting.
  5. Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) through American Medical Technologists within 1 year.
  6. Externship in a medical or ambulatory health setting is strongly preferred.
  7. Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program is preferred.
  8. Externship at MedStar Health may substitute for experience.

This position offers a hiring range of $19.17 - $33.08.
