General Summary Of Position
MedStar Health is looking for a Medical Assistant to join our team! We are seeking a Certified Medical Assistant with excellent customer service and patient interaction skills.
The Medical Assistant will perform clinical and administrative duties in an ambulatory care setting under the supervision of a physician/provider and/or a registered nurse. Duties may include venipuncture, medication and vaccine administration, measurement and documentation of vital signs, assisting providers with patient exams, and providing telephone and clerical support.
Position may require floating to other sites/locations within the system.

Primary Duties
- Assist providers with patient preparation, office procedures, examinations, and patient education. Support the clinical care team to ensure optimal patient flow. Review and prepare for scheduled visits. Screen patients for preventative care, ongoing support, barriers to care, safety concerns, and fall risks. Conduct surveillance for care transitions, urgent/emergent care, or follow-up tasks. Conduct motivational interviews and patient coaching on disease management, behavioral health needs, and community outreach. Notify providers of any behavioral health findings.
- Report problems concerning patients, families, and staff. Participate in performance improvement initiatives. Attend safety and infection control training. Maintain compliance by auditing logs, checking medication supplies, maintaining emergency equipment, and ensuring a clutter-free environment. Engage in population health activities including patient self-management, care/health goal setting, pre-visit planning, and data capture for health improvements.
- Perform selected patient and laboratory tests, including Point of Care Testing, TB skin testing, EKGs, pulmonary function, vision, and hearing tests. Remove sutures/staples. Document activities in the EMR. Follow up on tests such as pap smears, lead levels, HIV, mammograms, and STDs. Collect and process specimens, complete requisitions, and document accordingly.
- Assist with patient discharge activities, provide chaperoning, and support infection prevention and environmental responsibilities. Update maintenance records and manage supplies. Provide telephone screening to gather patient information, determine appropriate actions, and document per protocols.
- May insert IV catheters and monitor urinary catheters. Prepare and administer oral medications and injections (intradermal, subcutaneous, intramuscular). Perform phlebotomy. Use EMR for medication refills, test requisitions, and insurance pre-authorizations.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma/GED
- Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) by the American Association of Medical Assistants
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Experience in an ambulatory care medical office or equivalent
- Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) through American Medical Technologists within 1 year
- Externship in a medical or ambulatory health setting strongly preferred
- Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program preferred
Externship programs at MedStar Health may substitute for experience in ambulatory care.
This position has a hiring range of $19.17 - $33.08.
