Job summary

Miami Children’s Hospital is seeking a Medical Assistant for the PCC, full-time, day shifts in Miami, FL. You will assist in patient examinations, immunizations, and support patient care management under physician supervision.

Responsibilities include handling administrative tasks, chart preparation, and basic lab/patient coordination while ensuring accurate documentation and patient communication. Bilingual English/Spanish is highly preferred; previous clinic experience is a plus.

Qualifications

  • Proof of graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program.
  • Nursing Degree: ASN, BSN.
  • LPN license from Florida - active and in good standing.
  • Paramedic or EMT license from Florida - active and in good standing.
  • Current Medical Assistant Certification - active and in good standing.
  • Certified Nursing Assistant (excluded in primary care sites) from Florida.
  • American Heart Association BLS - active and in good standing.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares and administers medications to patients as directed by provider.
  • Prepares and administers immunizations to patients as directed by provider (primary care).
  • Communicates significant changes in patient conditions to clinicians and physicians.
  • Ensures medical records contain necessary documentation for appointments and charting.
  • Gathers data for reports and materials as needed for provider review.
  • Maintains billing processes and assists with claims forms and patient inquiries about payments.
  • Operates and maintains medical supplies and equipment; ensures clean work areas and patient rooms.
  • Performs vital signs and patient/family education; assists with procedures and specimen collection.
  • Prepares for visits by organizing charts, super bills, and informing staff of schedule changes.
  • Schedules and verifies appointments and referrals; processes documentation for visits and follow-ups.

Description

Job Summary
Assists in examinations and treatment of patient's care under the direction of the physician and/or clinician. Supports patient care management by performing various administrative functions.
Job Specific Duties

  • Answers telephones, routes calls, takes, and relays accurate phone messages.
  • Prepares and administers medications to patients as directed by provider.
  • For primary care Medical Assistants; prepares and administers immunizations to patients as directed by provider.
  • Communicates all significant changes in patient conditions or behavior to clinicians and physicians.
  • Ensures all medical record/patient charts contains necessary documentation for medical appointments. Completes charting, collects, and distributes medical record documents related to patient.
  • Gathers data for general information, special reports, contacting other employees, departments, agencies, and individuals for additional material. May prepare reports for provider approval.
  • Maintains/prepares billing charge and reconciliation, assist in completing claims forms, and answers patient questions in reference to payment status.
  • Runs reports for credit cards, super bills, and etc. Prepares final bookkeeping of assigned cash drawer and prepares and makes timely deposits.
  • Maintains a clean and orderly work area and patient rooms.
  • Operates and maintains equipment in proper working condition/order. Ensures medical supplies and inventory are maintained.
  • Performs and documents vital signs and measurements. Provides and documents patient and family education.
  • Assists physician with simple procedures and patient transport. Collects specimens and distributes to laboratory for results.
  • Prepares for patient visits by preparing /pulling charts, printing super bills, and informing physician and other clinical staff of changes in schedule.
  • Schedules appointments, diagnostic, therapeutic, verifies medical appointments, obtains and/or verify authorizations.
  • Processes medical documentation for office visit and follow-up with patient when required.
  • Serves as receptionist, conducts patient check-in, registration, collects fee for service/co-payments, and verifies referrals, insurance data, patient’s address & other pertinent information.
  • Tracks all samples per policy before providing to patients to ensure proper coordination with physician orders or requests.
  • Enters electronic order for lab, x-ray and medication/prescriptions for provider review and approval in electronic medical record.
  • For primary care Medical Assistant: performs and manages labs as ordered by the medical doctor to ensure regulatory requirements.
  • Process refills as directed by provider and written protocols.
Qualifications
  • Possess one of the following:
    • Proof of graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program
    • Nursing Degree: ASN, BSN
    • LPN license from Florida - must maintain certification active and in good standing throughout employment
    • Paramedic or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) license from Florida - must maintain certification active and in good standing throughout employment
    • Current Medical Assistant Certification: must maintain certification active and in good standing throughout employment
    • Certified Nursing Assistant (excluded in primary care sites) from Florida
  • Candidates who do not possess one of the above eligible degrees, licenses or certification requirements may still be considered if they meet one of the below:
    • Prior medical assistant experience in a physician practice and able to produce at least one of the above requirements within 6 months of hire
    • Candidate possesses 25+ years of experience of continuous medical assistant experience in a physician practice
  • American Heart Association BLS - maintain active and in good standing throughout employment

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • High School education or equivalent preferred.
  • 1 year of medical assistant experience preferred
  • Fluent in both English and Spanish highly preferred.
  • Able to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Basic computer and math skills.
  • Excellent patient management, customer service, and interpersonal skills.
  • 1-2 years of physician office experience preferred.
  • 1-2 years of experience coordinating clinical care for patients preferred.
  • Strong problem solving, critical thinking and conflict resolution skills.
  • Able to manage multiple priorities and strong time management skills.
  • Able to float to various Primary Care Centers while maintaining the delivery of clinical excellence and high-quality service.
  • Able to work effectively in a collaborative environment.
