Job Overview

The Medical Assistant’s primary responsibility is to assist in delivering healthcare management for the practice. This includes actively supporting primary clinical teams and demonstrating the values of the organization. The Medical Assistant works under supervision from the practice manager, physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Participate in quality improvement initiatives.
  2. Manage appointment scheduling and referral tracking.
  3. Open and close the office as required.
  4. Assist in capturing patient demographic information.
  5. Attend departmental meetings and participate as a team member in problem resolution and process improvement.
  6. Conduct pre-visit planning by reviewing and updating medical records, recent test results, and correspondence to determine needed services.
  7. Complete pre-charting up to 5 days prior to appointments and communicate with the Care Team as needed.
  8. Prepare patients for examinations, including taking vital signs, updating medication and allergy lists, and gathering visit reasons.
  9. Provide patient care services such as maintaining exam rooms, assisting with procedures, and giving injections within scope of practice.
  10. Dispose of bio-hazardous and regular waste following protocol.
  11. Maintain vaccine temperature logs, inventory, and medical supplies.
  12. Assist with scheduling outpatient testing, pre-certifications, and patient communications.
  13. Coordinate with providers and Care Coordinators regarding hospital discharges, ED visits, and follow-up care.
  14. Review clinical messages and update notes to ensure communication accuracy.
  15. Maintain referral queues and communication with other departments.
Physical and Sensory Requirements

Requires sitting, standing, and walking for extended periods, continual use of fingers, occasional lifting up to 25 pounds, pushing carts and wheelchairs, and reaching above shoulder level. Good hearing and visual acuity are required.

Education and Experience

Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program is preferred. Two years of healthcare experience and customer service experience are preferred. Current BLS/CPR certification is required within 60 days of hire, through the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
