Job description

We are seeking a full-time, 40-hour Medical Assistant/Orthopedic Tech to join our team! As true partners to our nurses and providers, our Medical Assistant/Ortho Techs work autonomously to the top of their education and certification levels while also functioning as part of a collaborative team.

  1. Responsibilities include:
    • Escort patients to exam rooms and complete intake.
    • Apply, adjust, and remove casts, soft goods, and braces for upper and lower extremities.
    • Assess patient comfort related to casts, braces, and dressings, and assist with comfort measures.
    • Gait training with the use of crutches.
    • Educate patients on proper hygiene with DME.
    • Assist physicians/physician assistants in orthopedic care as needed.
    • Perform surgical dressing changes and wound care, including removal of staples and sutures.
    • Document all work in the electronic medical record.
    • Clean and restock exam rooms, manage inventory, and maintain equipment.
    • Respond to patient questions via portal and return calls with instructions.
    • Answer phones courteously and take accurate messages.
    • Attend meetings, trainings, and participate in committees as requested.
    • Engage in professional development through educational programs.
    • Work in different departments and sites as needed.
    • Perform additional duties such as drawing injections, post-op and wound care, etc.
  2. Schedule:
  • Practice hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm. The schedule is staggered based on practice needs.
  • May require cross-coverage at the Orthopedic Walk-In Clinic, operating Monday-Friday 8:00am-8:00pm and Saturdays 8:00am-1:00pm.
  • Flexibility to work early hours, evenings, and weekends on a rotating basis is encouraged.
  • Employees may be asked to float to other departments within the WHP system during staffing shortages or other circumstances.
Qualifications

Education
  • Completion of an Orthopedic Tech program and certification or registration within 1 year of hire.
  • Or, Medical Assistant Certification (CMA)/Registration (RMA) with 5 years of ortho casting experience plus certification or registration within 1 year of hire.
Experience
  • Required: 1-3 years of related patient care experience.
  • Preferred: 1-3 years in orthopedics, including 6 months as an Ortho Tech.
Licensure and Certifications
  • Orthopedic Technologist Certified (OTC) or Registered Ortho Tech (ROT) within 1 year of hire.
  • BLS certification (AHA or ARC) within 3 months of hire.
