The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) is a multi-skilled worker who performs a wide range of clinical and administrative roles within a physician's office. Under supervision of a Physician and/or the direction of a licensed nurse, the CMA provides direct and indirect patient care, performs laboratory and other testing, and may assist with clerical functions. The CMA is a key team member, interacting and communicating effectively with patients and clinical staff in the ambulatory care environment.
Responsibilities:

- Assist with patient rooms and provide direct patient care under supervision, recording medical histories, medications, vital signs, and preparing patients for procedures. Tailor care to individual patient needs, considering age and abilities.
- Explain treatment procedures and reinforce patient education regarding medications, diets, or testing, as provided by RN/LPN or physician.
- Administer injections and medications as directed by a physician.
- Perform point-of-care testing (venipuncture, urine dips, finger sticks, etc.) and other office procedures (EKG, pulmonary testing, chronic disease management testing).
- Understand the purpose, process, and results of common tests and lab specimens.
- Relay normal test results to patients or read results verbatim from physician documentation; consult with RN, LPN, or physician for patient questions.
- Adhere to infection control standards, maintain exam/procedure areas, and perform quality checks on office instruments. Be knowledgeable about sterilization techniques.
- Participate in shared governance, committees, and departmental projects.

- Complete other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required:
- Two or more years of recent experience as a Medical Assistant in a physician's office or completion of an accredited Medical Assisting Program.
- High School Diploma or equivalent plus 2+ years of MA experience or completion of an accredited Medical Assisting Program.
- American Heart Association BLS/CPR certification.
- Completion of a phlebotomy class or equivalent experience, basic computer skills, effective communication in English, and ability to assess the need for interpreter services.
- New graduates must obtain certification within 1 year of hire. Accepted certifications include CMA, RMA, NCMA, CCMA, NRCMA, or an active RN/LPN license in Illinois.
Preferred:
- Associate's degree in Medical Assisting.
- Proficiency in a second language is a plus.
There is a $2,000 sign-on bonus for external candidates and those who haven't worked at NM in over a year.
