General Summary of Position

MedStar Health is seeking a Medical Assistant to join our Occupational Health team at Washington Hospital Center. The ideal candidate will possess excellent customer service and patient interaction skills.

This individual will perform clinical and administrative duties under the supervision of a physician/provider and/or a registered nurse. Responsibilities include venipuncture, medication and vaccine administration, measurement and documentation of vital signs, assisting with patient exams, and providing telephone and clerical support.

The position may require floating to other sites within the system.

Primary Duties:
  1. Assist with patient preparation for examinations, procedures, and education. Manage patient volume, provide telephone screening, escort patients, and assist with discharge activities. Ensure infection prevention, maintain equipment logs, manage supplies, and update records.
  2. Conduct motivational interviews, including patient screening, disease management coaching, and community outreach. Identify behavioral health needs and participate in population management activities.
  3. Report potential problems concerning patients and participate in quality improvement initiatives. Maintain compliance with safety and equipment standards. Review and prepare for patient visits, screen for preventive care, and conduct surveillance for transitions of care and urgent needs.
  4. Perform laboratory tests, including Point of Care Testing, TB skin testing, ECG, pulmonary function, vision, and hearing tests. Remove sutures/staples and perform UDS following protocols.
  5. Under provider supervision, insert IV catheters, monitor urinary catheters, administer medications, perform phlebotomy, and document activities in the EMR. Manage test requisitions, medication refills, and insurance authorizations.
Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Experience in an ambulatory care or medical office setting, or completion of an externship program at MedStar Health as a substitute.
  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program preferred.
  • Experience with electronic medical records is preferred.

This position has a hiring range of $19.17 - $33.08.
