Job summary

Rush University Medical Center in Chicago seeks a full-time Medical Assistant to support physicians, mid-levels, and nurses in an ambulatory care setting. You will manage patient flow, prepare exam rooms, and perform vital signs and basic point-of-care testing under physician supervision.

Responsibilities include phlebotomy, injections, immunizations, EKGs, inventory, chart accuracy, scheduling, and collaboration with the care team.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• CMA certification required upon hire.
• Rush Apprenticeship graduates must obtain CMA certification within six months.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate and maintain organized patient flow.
• Perform patient intake: vital signs, reason for visit, and interim history.
• Prepare patient for exam based on reason for visit.
• Prepare and support patient and assist provider with procedures.
• Review appointment schedules and ensure all patient charts are available for the visit.
• Review patient charts and ensure that all ancillary reports and required paperwork are available to the provider at the time of visit.
• Perform basic lab and testing procedures according to standards.
• Perform phlebotomy and EKGs.
• Administer immunizations as ordered by Physician.
• Administers medications after competency assessment.
• Perform nebulizer treatments in the clinic setting after competency assessment.
• Documents administration of over-the-counter medications and/or other medications in Epic per policy.
• Cleans, prepares and stocks exam rooms, treatment rooms, and workstations.
• Assist in scheduling of patient tests, procedures, and follow-up appointments.
• Maintains inventory of medical supplies and equipment.

Sign on Bonus: $3,000

Pay Range: $22.72 - $31.80 per hour

The Medical Assistant is responsible for assisting Physicians, Mid‑Level Practitioners, and Registered Nurses with the evaluation, management, and treatment of patients in an ambulatory care setting. The Medical Assistant assumes responsibility for maintaining patient flow, the upkeep of exam and treatment rooms, and performing basic skills such as vital signs and point‑of‑care testing. In addition, the Certified Medical Assistant will administer intramuscular injections, immunizations, small volume nebulizer treatment, and over‑the‑counter medications under the direction of a Physician.

Required Job Qualifications

• High school diploma/GED required.
• Clinical Medical Assistant Certification by AAMA, AMT, NCCT, NAHP, AAH, or NHA required upon hire.
• Graduates of a Rush Medical Assistant Apprenticeship program are required to obtain Clinical Medical Assistant Certification by AAMA, AMT, NCCT, NAHP, AAH, or NHA within six months of hire.
• Current CPR certification required upon start date.

Preferred Job Qualifications

• One year clinical experience.
• Phlebotomy experience.

Responsibilities

• Prepares patient for exam based on reason for visit.
• Prepares and supports patient and assists provider with procedures.
• Reviews appointment schedules and ensures all patient charts are available for the visit.
• Reviews patient charts and ensures that all ancillary reports and required paperwork are available to the provider at the time of visit.
• Performs basic lab and testing procedures according to standards.
• Performs phlebotomy and EKGs.
• Administers immunizations as ordered by Physician.
• Administers RUMG approved intramuscular or subcutaneous medications after competency has been assessed, verified and documented.
• Performs nebulizer treatments in the clinic setting after competency has been assessed, verified and documented.
• Performs Tuberculin skin testing upon the order of the Physician.
• Demonstrates appropriate population specific techniques with patients.
• Documents administration of over-the-counter medications and/or other medications in Epic per policy or protocol.
• Cleans, prepares and stocks exam rooms, treatment rooms, and workstations.
• Calls patients regarding test results and medical instruction under the direction of a Physician.
• Calls in medication refills under the direction of a Physician or protocol.
• Documents patient care information in the outpatient medical record according to standards.
• Assists with scheduling of patient tests, procedures, and follow‑up appointments.
• Assists in the care, cleaning, and sterilization of equipment and instruments.
• Maintains the inventory of medical and linen supplies.
• Maintains quality control for equipment.
• Provides cross coverage to other clinical areas as assigned.
• Participates in quality improvement projects.
• Maintains compliance with The Joint Commission (TJC) standards and other regulatory bodies.
• May have Unit specific duties as needed.
