Job summary

First Physicians in Odessa, TX is hiring a Medical Assistant for our primary care and walk-in clinic. You will support providers and nurses, room patients, take vitals, assist with exams, and help with DOT physicals and on-the-job injuries.

This is a busy on-site role requiring professionalism and efficiency. The ideal candidate has MA training or equivalent experience, BLS certification, and a friendly, organized approach to a fast-paced schedule.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED is required.
• Completion of a medical assistant program or equivalent experience is required.
• Current BLS (CPR) certification, or willingness to obtain within 30 days of hire.
• Comfortable taking vital signs and giving injections.
• Friendly, professional, and patient demeanor.
• Organized and able to manage a busy walk-in schedule.

Responsibilities

• Greet and room patients, take vitals, assist with exams and procedures.
• Document visits accurately in Athena EMR.
• Give injections and immunizations as directed by the provider.
• Perform point-of-care tests (glucose, urinalysis, strep, flu, COVID).
• Draw blood and collect lab specimens; assist with exams and minor procedures.
• Perform EKGs and basic wound care; cover front desk when needed.

About the role

The Medical Assistant supports our providers and nurses by keeping patients moving smoothly through their visits. In a busy walk-in setting, you’ll room patients, take vitals, assist with exams and procedures, and help every patient feel comfortable and cared for.

Responsibilities

• Greet patients warmly and bring them back to exam rooms
• Take vital signs, height, weight, and medical history
• Document visits accurately in Athena
• Give injections and immunizations as directed by the provider
• Perform point-of-care tests such as glucose, urinalysis, strep, flu, and COVID
• Draw blood and collect lab specimens
• Assist providers with exams and minor procedures
• Perform EKGs and basic wound care
• Help with DOT physicals and workers’ compensation visits, including drug screens, vision and hearing tests, and required paperwork
• Give patients follow-up and discharge instructions as directed by the provider
• Send prescription refill requests and return patient calls as directed
• Help with prior authorizations and referrals as needed
• Clean and stock exam rooms and maintain medical supplies
• Cover the front desk when needed, including check-in and scheduling
• Follow infection control, safety, and HIPAA guidelines

Required qualifications

• High school diploma or GED
• Completion of a medical assistant program, or equivalent clinical experience
• Current BLS (CPR) certification, or willingness to get it within 30 days of hire
• Comfortable taking vital signs and giving injections
• Friendly, professional, and patient
• Organized and able to keep up with a busy walk-in schedule

Preferred qualifications

• Medical assistant certification
• 1 or more years of experience in primary care or urgent care
• Experience with Athena EMR
• Phlebotomy and EKG experience
• Experience with DOT physicals
• Bilingual in English and Spanish
