Medical Assistant (MA) - Waterville Family Physicians

Summary of Primary Function/General Purpose of Position

The Medical Assistant Certified is a multi-skilled clinical professional that provides indirect and/or direct patient care within the scope of practice and in alignment with the standards of excellence and quality. Under the direction of the provider, the Medical Assistant contributes to the completion of the patient’s chief complaint (including, but not limited to, respirations, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, height, weight, and temperature), documents patient/family needs, participates in planning and implementing care for patients, and administers ordered medications (oral, injection, topical, etc.) within the Medical Assisting scope and state guidelines.

Essential Job Functions
  • Understand and adhere to the legal responsibilities and requirements within the Medical Assistant role.
  • Identify significant changes in patient condition through data collection and report them to the provider.
  • Troubleshoot issues and escalate problems to provider, supervisor, or appropriate internal resource.
  • Demonstrate standards of excellence in care in all interactions, for both internal and external customers.
  • Maintain clinical and administrative skills per departmental guidelines to meet patient care and operational needs.
  • Show patients to examination rooms and prepare them for the physician.
  • Travel to other facilities or adjust hours to meet patient care needs as directed by the practice manager.
  • Maintain a safe environment by keeping work areas, exam rooms, and equipment clean and safe, ensuring supplies are available and functioning.
  • Assist with virtual health visits, including setup, pre-charting, troubleshooting, and obtaining relevant patient information.
  • Document accurately in electronic medical records (EMR).
  • Manage in-basket messages in the electronic health record (EHR) as per provider instructions.
  • Perform front desk workflows such as patient registration, scheduling, triage, and check-in/out.
  • Follow up on orders, appointments, referrals, and collect co-pays as needed.
  • Order supplies, track referrals, labs, and diagnostic tests, and dispose of contaminated supplies.

This list is not exhaustive; other duties may be assigned as needed by supervisors.

Licensing/Certification

Active Medical Assisting certification from one of the following is required:

  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), Registered Medical Assistant (RMA), Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA), or other recognized certifications listed.
  • If unable to obtain MA certification, an Assessment-Based Recognition in Order Entry (ABR-OE) is acceptable (not in South Carolina).

BLS Basic Life Support from the American Heart Association is required at hire (locations vary in requirements).

Education

High School/GED is required. Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program is preferred, with specific requirements for South Carolina.

Work Experience

Preferred: Completion of externship or clinical lab training, and 1 year of recent Medical Assisting experience.

  • Provide medication and treatment information to patients.
  • Maintain a sterile environment and perform routine lab tests.
  • Perform general office duties and assist physicians with examinations and procedures.
  • Strong communication skills, attention to detail, multitasking ability, and proficiency with office equipment.
