Job summary

Trinity Health MI is seeking a part‑time Medical Assistant to support patient examinations. You will document medical records, assist with procedures, and educate patients and caregivers under supervision.

Responsibilities include vital signs, medication administration, specimen collection, and enter/verify orders in the EMR for accurate patient care. Ideal candidates have a high school diploma or GED and MA program completion, with CMA/RMA/NCMA certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Greet patients and escort to exam rooms.
  • Document visit reason and assess need for follow‑up.
  • Enter orders into EMR per guidelines and protocols.
  • Record vital signs and calculate BMI.
  • Administer medications and renew prescriptions as directed.
  • Perform specimen collection and routine tests as directed.
  • Maintain HIPAA compliance and patient confidentiality.
  • Support office operations and patient education as needed.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and team meetings.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Assists in the examination and treatment of patients by tracking patient information, documenting the medical record, assisting with in‑office procedures and testing, administering medications and providing patient and caregiver education. Duties are performed under the oversight and direction of professional clinical staff and providers as outlined in the Clinical Support Staff Scope of Practice document.

Essential Job Functions
  • Greets and courteously escorts patients and guests to the examination room.
  • Determines and documents the reason for a visit; uses critical thinking to assess whether patient information requires higher level follow‑up.
  • Performs initial response screening following protocols approved by supervising providers; obtains necessary patient information to complete EMR templates.
  • Records patient vital signs (pulse, temperature, blood pressure, height, weight) and calculates BMI.
  • Directly enters medication, laboratory and radiology orders into the electronic medical record in accordance with state, local and professional guidelines.
  • Performs diagnostic tests as directed and may operate equipment for routine diagnostic testing.
  • Conducts basic Gaps in Care and, when credentialed, performs TB testing.
  • Tracks and informs patients of laboratory/diagnostic test results and communicates provider instructions based on results.
  • Administers prescribed medications and facilitates prescription renewals as directed.
  • Performs general specimen collection duties (blood, urine, throat swabs, etc.) and assists with other office procedures or surgeries; adheres to all safety precautions.
  • Participates in disease management programs under the supervision of the Care Manager and/or Nurse Manager.
  • Works to improve practice performance on quality incentives (Provider Dashboard, PCMH, BCN Physician Recognition Program, BCBSM Clinical Quality, Priority Health Physician Improvement Plan).
  • Provides patient/family education as directed by the healthcare provider.
  • Takes and relays accurate, comprehensive, signed messages in a timely manner.
  • Serves as liaison between patient and healthcare provider when necessary and ensures timely follow‑up on patient inquiries.
  • Attends required meetings, participates in committees, and supports other offices through meetings and training as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned within the scope of MA certification.

  • Performs all functions of the Medical Receptionist I job description.
  • Conducts drug and alcohol testing (breath and urine) in accordance with Department of Transportation rules and regulations.
  • Conducts FIT testing.

Essential Qualifications
  • Education: High school diploma or GED. Successful completion of one of the following: MA program and externship; MA internship; EMT program; Paramedic program; or Certified Athletic Trainer.
  • MA‑Non‑Credentialed I: Preferred eligibility for Medical Assistant certification or current active EMT or Paramedic license in Michigan; valid CPR certification.
  • MA‑Credentialed I: Certification as a Medical Assistant from a recognized agency (e.g., CMA, RMA, NCMA, CCMA, NRCMA, CMAC). Workplace Health requires DOT Drug Screen Collector and DOT Breath Alcohol Technician certifications.
  • Minimum experience: 0‑1 year of clinical experience or equivalent education/experience. If MA program is incomplete, 2+ years of clinical experience in a community clinic is required.

  • Ability to maintain exam rooms, supply inventory, and move between practice sites.
Minimum Physical Expectations

Onsite work requires keyboarding, phone work, charting, lifting over 50 lbs, handling patients, walking, bending, stooping, reaching, and occasional lifting or pulling up to 100 lbs. Requires adequate vision and hearing to conduct phone and face‑to‑face communication in English.

Minimum Environmental Expectations

Work occurs in a medical facility with exposure to patient care equipment, hazardous materials (bloodborne pathogens, bodily fluids), sharps, x‑rays, and frequent patient interaction that may be stressful.
