Job description

Medical Assistant/LPN Spine Surgery Clinic

This position is responsible for performing a variety of patient care related activities including: assisting the providers and performing a variety of diagnostic Lab and X-ray procedures according to established policies and procedures.

Job Functions

When performing nursing support functions

  • Escorts patients to examination room and obtains vitals and documents in EMR
  • Administers prescribed medications and treatments in accordance with clinic policies and scope of certification/licensure
  • Prepares equipment and assists providers during examination, testing and treatment of patients
  • Performs room turn over in patient rooms between cases and at the end of day
  • Assists in arranging referrals/prior authorizations as necessary
  • Assists with patient education
  • Performs other duties as assigned

When performing Lab and/or X-ray functions

  • Maintains stocked supplies and inventory
  • Sterilizes instruments, exam rooms and equipment
  • Performs testing procedures as required
  • Prepares procedure room/area and instructs patients
  • Troubleshoots and maintains equipment
  • Completes daily QA/QC procedures and provides maintenance/adjustments to equipment
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Education/Work Experience/License/Certifications

  • Graduation from Medical Assisting program or School of Practical Nursing
  • Graduate of clinical laboratory program and/or ability to display and complete job competencies
  • Current LPN Licensure or Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Assistant (RMA) (LPNs/MAs will have 1 year to become certified in order to maintain employment)
  • Current CPR certification

Knowledge/Skills/ Abilities

  • Ability to multi-task
  • Ability to serve patients in a friendly and efficient manner
  • Knowledge of basic computer functions and Microsoft Office applications
  • Ability to work autonomously and as a team
  • Capable of making independent decisions with the use of good critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • Ability to respond appropriately to unpredictable situations and diverse patient populations
  • Ability to communicate in the English language for effective written and verbal correspondence in order to complete job functions as mentioned above

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities when performing X-ray functions

  • Knowledge of x-ray safety for patients and personnel
  • Knowledge of proper patient positioning and state radiology regulations
  • Skill in performing quality control and maintaining records
  • Ability to troubleshoot equipment and technique problems

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities when performing Lab functions

  • Ability to troubleshoot problems with lab testing, equipment, patient samples, and kits
  • Skill in performing quality control and maintaining records
  • Ability to troubleshoot equipment and technique problems

Preferred Qualifications

  • EMR experience
  • X-Ray Operator License (grandfathered prior to 2007) or completion of AART limited scope Operator examination per Minnesota Department of Health
