Primary Function

The Medical Assistant Lead is responsible for assisting the Practice Manager in overseeing daily clinical operations for small to medium-sized offices with less than 4.5 clinicians and less than 6 Medical Assistants. Ensures Medical Assistants perform quality team-based patient care under the direct supervision of clinicians for both clinical and administrative functions to promote health and wellness in a safe and friendly environment. Supports clinicians and care management teams in the maintenance of chronic disease management, examination, and treatment of pediatric patients. Specialty training as applicable.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Supports practice manager and PA management in training, development, and competency evaluation of Medical Assistant staff; monitors patient visit time and experience; ensures staff compliance with infection prevention, medication management, vaccine cold chain handling, storage, and appropriate stock levels of clinical supplies.
  2. May assume all clinical administrative responsibilities in the absence of the Practice Manager.
  3. Maintains high-quality patient experience, welcomes patients, ensures a safe environment, and maintains office and exam room cleanliness and supplies in adherence to infection control policies.
  4. Performs and documents patient intake vitals, including height, weight, temperature, blood pressure, pulse, and respiration; notifies clinician of abnormal findings.
  5. Interviews patients, documents medical history, updates records, and obtains necessary medical records and test results for clinician review.
  6. Prepares patients for examinations, ensures clinician orders are performed and documented, and assists with age-appropriate screenings and procedures under supervision.
  7. Performs vaccine and medication reconciliation, provides education, and ensures proper handling and storage of vaccines.
  8. Administers vaccines and medications following proper identification and protocols, with post-observation.
  9. Completes follow-up tasks such as phone inquiries, prescriptions, referrals, and appointment scheduling.
  10. Proficient in lab services, including phlebotomy, sample collection, quality control, and reporting.
