Job Responsibilities
- Prepares and rooms the patient for exam by obtaining vital signs and gathering/documenting/updating pertinent health information (e.g., chief complaint, allergies, medications). Monitors and completes Clinical Integration/Quality Improvement measures with notification to the clinician for opportunities within their scope.
- Performs laboratory procedures (e.g., strep test, wound culture, specimen collection) using aseptic technique and infection control guidelines.
- Assists Physician/Advanced Practice Clinician (APC) with procedures such as pelvic exams, allergy scratch testing, EMG, cautery, colposcopy, etc.
- Administers routine medications under Physician/APC orders or approved protocols, including immunizations, antibiotics, vitamins, and topical agents.
- Follows through with procedure or test requests, care algorithms, appointments, and referrals. Refers questions to Registered Nurses and Physician/APC as appropriate and relays information to patients.
- Communicates effectively with the healthcare team and patients to ensure smooth clinic operations and accurate information exchange.
- Performs clinical support tasks such as suture removal, lab procedures, phlebotomy, EKG, spirometry, Holter monitor application, and prescription refills under supervision.
- Provides age-appropriate care, demonstrating knowledge of growth and development principles, and interprets patient data to meet individual needs.
Licensure, Certification, and Education
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from AHA within 45 days, unless exempted by department leadership.
- GED or High School Equivalency Diploma.
- Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program or 2 years of verifiable full-time experience as a Medical Assistant within the last 5 years.
Experience and Skills
- No prior experience required.
- Ability to perform routine and complex technical skills within the scope of practice after demonstrated competency.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to develop rapport with patients and team members.
- Proficient in computer skills, including electronic medical records systems, email, and Windows navigation.
- Strong customer service skills to support a positive patient experience.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, lift up to 35 pounds, and perform various physical movements throughout the day.
- Use of patient handling equipment for lifts over 35 pounds, with team assistance when needed.
- Exposure to hazards such as biological, chemical, electrical, and mechanical risks, with necessary protective equipment.
