Job summary

Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portsmouth, OH is seeking a Medical Assistant Intern to support clinical staff under supervision. The role emphasizes patient care, charting, and coordination of referrals and tests within a team environment.

Responsibilities include assisting with vitals, specimen handling, scheduling, and ensuring supplies and documentation are accurate. This position offers exposure to a wide range of ambulatory care activities within the SOMC system.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
• Enrolled in an accredited medical assistant program (CMA, RMA, CCMA, NCMA, AMCA) is required.

Responsibilities

• Makes phone calls for referrals and prescriptions; documents in patient charts.
• Observes examinations, procedures, venipuncture, and other diagnostic testing.
• Assists with collecting and documenting vitals, chief complaints, pain, and PMH.
• Ensures clinical supplies are stocked.
• Reviews next day’s appointments and pulls lab results as needed.
• Answers phones, schedules appointments, and scans documents.
• Collaborates with health care team to meet patient needs.
• Performs pre-cleaning, decontamination, and transports instruments.
• Trains MOA duties.
• Follows vaccine and medication management policy.
• Follows charting procedures per policy.
• Documents during provider services when appropriate.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
